B Thermostat Question

Our '39 "B" Allis Chalmers has no thermostat. Will the housing for the thermostat fit right on my tractor, or is there a clearance problem??
I see the housings advertised sometimes.

My 39 has no thermostat either (I left it out because I could not find the parts), but has the tall housing and gauge. Gauge will NOT clear hood without the hole, but if you are willing to just plug gauge hole in outlet and guess at temp you could put the housing on. Of course I live in northeast Texas and only needed the gauge and all the cooling available, so I have no problems summer or winter without a thermostat. Depends on where you live. Be aware that the bolts in mine for 65 years were in water and who knows what kind of antifreezes all that time. When I finally got through drilling and tapping, I replaced with stainless slathered in marine lube. Hope they come out again in another 65 years!!

The later style housing is a bolt on deal. The temp gauge can be handled several ways. Cut a hole in hood, install a remote (your normal basic temp gauge) or plug the hole and guess temp like was done for prior 60 years. I think that thermostat temp control and pressurized radiators came at the same time, Im guessing around 1941? The Bs and Cs all had shutters long after they had pressurized radiators and thermostats.

Sounds like you have a B made to run on more then one fuel and if so it should have a set of shutters to control the engine heat. A lot of the early tractors never hard thermostats but did have shutters.

The only problem I can think of is the hole in the hood for the temp gauge. You would need the housing, thermostat spring, thermostat, and the temp gauge. If you get a housing, make sure it comes with the plate on the bottom that holds the thermostat in. To my limited knowledge, they didn't change the hood to engine clearance over the years...BUT, I know they did change block castings at least once...someone with alittle more knowledge can help you with that one.
