I have a WC with an "S" after the serial number and I need to change the pinion shaft. I have another WC that doesn't have an "S" after the serial number. The parts book I have gives different part numbers for the pinion shaft for these two tractors, but I'm wondering if they still might be interchangable. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bill,
The rear in your WC with the "S" designates it's a Steel rear. The other rear you have is probably the standard cast rear like what's in my WC. Not sure about parts interchangability between the two rears though. Maybe someone else can shed some light on it, but that's what the "S" means...

Do you know if the steel rear end is considered better than the standard cast iron rear end?

The steel rear is rarer - not as many made. Believe they were made during WWII. You could check that with the serial number.
