Hey people, flushed engine, replaced oil/filter and added STP. Still have low oil pressure. Should I block one of the ports on the tube inside oil filter or get another gauge (this one is only 3 month old-maybe 6 hours). I am using Delco filter and Castrol oil (20-50 for summer in Arizona). It has had low pressure since I put a gauge on it (old one was inop).
Thanks in advance for the help.

I rebuilt one of those engines for my cousin a few years ago and it seems like it had a broken spring in the oil pump that would not allow it to work properly. It also suffered from either very low or almost no oil pressure. A quick rebuild and fixing the oil pump it was read to go. We did have to prime the oil pump though to get pressure again. Good luck.

I would say if you are using the right oil filter you are probably OK. As a kid I worked on a small dairy farm and one of the two tractors was a 39 or 40 B. It had been rebuilt once or twice, (this was between about 1962 and 68), and was ready again, however the whole time I worked there and ran it it never got the needle over the very lower portion of the NORMAL range, and when warm or HOT the needle would be barely off the zero mark. And it was worked hard and long sometimes too. The other tractor, by the way was a 56, 45. In the summer hay season both were busy as we put up 10,000 bales. On some days the B would start out mowing as soon as the hay was dry, for for a few hours, then maybe hitch up the rake and rake what was mowed a few days ago, maybe with an hour on the road between. Being kids we weren't too easy on it. As the notches for the throttle lever were worn we would wire the throttlelever in the wide open position, and there it would stay while mowing, or over the road travel. As I said, that tractor ran for years this way.

This may be a long shot but it happened to me. One of my b's had no oil pressure and I found the hole in the oil filter bracket that led to the gauge was plugged. The hole was quite small. Maybe to help keep the gauge from pulsing. Took the bracket off, cleaned it up real good and gained 15 PSI.

I would also change the type of oil that you are using. Castrol has a synthetic and natural blend. That means that the viscosity is higher than most other blends of oil. Your getting suffecient oil flow, I believe, but it wont build pressure in the filter. I would recomend using a single weight oil, 30 weight. If your in AZ it would probably be better for the engine. Most of these engines were not engineered to use multi-viscosity oils. The Fram C159 is a good filter to use. No need to spend the extra $ for a the same filter with a different tag on it.

Just my 2 cents worth. I have used Castrol on one of my tractors and thought we had a problem. Took the filter off and started it and oil shot up three feet. I tryed to hold my fingers over the tube and couldnt, the pressure was to much. I put Penszoil 30W in and have great oil pressure. I also live in a desert climate and have not had any trouble.

Thanks for the responses. The gauge I have on it only has a low and normal reading. I will get a gauge with actual lbs. on it and see what I have. What should I have normally?
The delco filter is not pleated.

Hello maricopa,

I'd be curious to know just what reading you are getting?

It seems to me there's two general ways to go. 1, these old tractors will last a long time with low oil pressure, that is, as long as there is pressure. It's when there is no pressure when it is time to fret. 2, replace internal bearings because that is probably why oil pressure is low...worn crankshaft and connecting rod bearings...otherwise, overhaul.

This assumes that the oil pump is isn't worn itself and that your gauge is accurate.

Good luck,

RandyN

Oh, yes, I'd agree with russ1. If you're using the filter with pleated material instead of the packing, that will cause low oil pressure as well.

Your low oil pressure is more than likely caused by your filter. The only filter that I know that will work on your tractor is a Fram C159.

Hi Russ,

NAPA has recently come out with the new 7011 filter which replaces the 1101 that was messed up a few years ago when WIX changed from packed to pleated media. The 7011 now has packed media and is essentially the same as the Fram C-159. See here and scroll to near the bottom for a comparison.
