Please could anyone say where the field wire should go one my U ? It is a 6 volt Autolite generator with cutout relay on top + what looks like a field terminal next to it.My U over charged to 24+ volts the other day.Some one has cut the wire short at the generator and earthed it to the generator housing.My parts book shows 2 wires from the generator to the ammeter box but does not show any detail of what to do with the wires.Thanks allot Martin.

The field wire should go to a three position switch that grounds the field for high charge, grounds through a resistor for low charge or grounds the field and turns on the lights. The high charging rate and voltage is controled by the third brush in the generator. Being grounded to the frame yours is on full charge all the time and it sounds like your thrird brush needs adjusting to lower the charging voltage which should be around 7 volts but I dont have a book handy.

Hi, thanks for the advice i now have 7 v at 3 amps with switch in and 9 amps, 7.5 v with switch out,lights not fitted yet.The battery has been setup with - earth ,+ to starter i hope this is correct.
