D-17 Head on a WD

Will a D-17 head fit on a WD? I need to do a valve job on my WD, but have found a head off a D-17 which was rebuilt which can be had for 100.00.

i hope they dont all want $600.oo all my tractors have burnt out around the exhaust manifolds.the 17, wd45 and wd.ive always had trouble with mine and it seemed even the metal part of the exhaust gaskets, [oem] barely fit around the manifold

Thanks for the information. I guess the best thing to do is to rebuild the head myself. I live in what is now a non farm area, and all the local machine shops which did heads are gone.

i read that they will fit ok but not all the bolts line up or theres fewer...sposed to work ok as is.
thats just hear say...never did one myself.

I've heard they are the same bolt pattern as a WD-45 and that WD-45 heads will fit a WD. Some WC heads interchange as well - but not all. Count all the head bolts on your head and have the seller do the same. There are some head bolts with smaller heads so get both counts - small and large. You will need the push rods as well because the 45 and 17 heads are taller than WD. I don't know if your valve train will work. I had a similar dilemma on a late model WC that I rebuilt. I rejected it because of the valve train issues.

On the WC, I sent the head out and was quoted $613 to rebuild. So $100 is cheap. I had them send back the head without work on it. I recut the valves on my laythe - took an hour. I bought a seat grinding stone from NAPA and built a fixture for grinding the seats - another hour (all lathe work). One stone ground all of the seats (with out having to dress the stone) - another hour. Then I lapped them in and reassembled - another hour. About 4 hours total. The tractor starts after one or two revolutions and runs perfectly. Total cost was $18 for the stone. So I saved $595. This doesn't include gaskets, and rings, etc. I think my total cost was about $225. Pistons were within spec, cylinders were within spec and bearings were within spec. Rings were shot and it needed a valve job.

I remember when you said you had that high quote for a head- around here, I've had some done and they were always around a C note- can't imagine why it should cost five or so.

They obviously didn't need or want my business. They were going to do all new seats, guides, and valves. That is about $100 worth of parts. I suppose $500 for labor.
