B final drive oil seal leaking out axle shaft

This B has one big nut that holds the wheel casting to the axle shaft,is it possible to change the seal without removing the shaft from the housing? Also ,anyone have a number or know where I should start looking for a new seal. Thanks for any help here.

I spose in reference to what Dick was saying that a jiffy/speedy sleeve would not come big enough to fix a grooved axel.

With time and patience, I have always had success in filling grooved or rough shafts with JB weld or something and work the shaft smooth. Jut thinking about trying to do that with the axel in would seem to present a problem though.

I get my ole ac parts from agco, but don't know about your particular model.

I took 3 pieces of 1/4" scrap iron (brushog blade) and made myself a wrench. The nuts are stamped and usually rounded and hard to get a good grip on. Welded a pair at 90 degrees, the other with one long arm at 90 degrees, put them on the nut and welded the two into a wrench around the nut. It needs to be tight enough to require tapping over the nut. Then take off and weld really well. Lots of PB blaster, clean the threads, install the "wrench", apply the maul to the longer end, and off it comes. The cast iron wheel is splined onto the axle. Be careful, it's heavy, espcially with tire and rim still on, and extra if the tire is loaded.

Clean and polish (1200 grit) the axle before the new seal goes in, or it's sure to leak.

Check and adjust the bearing lash so the axle doesn't wander.

Oh, the nuts that lock the bull gear to the axle are the same as the wheel nut. Loosen them, remove the inner adjustment bolt and shims, and you can dirve the axle out easily.

the oil level is fine. I havn't removed the wheel yet. I'm still studying the nut.the last person to tighten it up must have used one really big hammer.A pipe wrench will undue it , but what is the tool of choice when it comes to putting it back together?

are you sure its not leaking because its over full from water getting into it? remove the plug and check oil level. Bob

If you remove the cast wheel, the seal will be obvious. Now, removing the cast wheel might be some serious work.

The short answer is yes. Success in stopping the leak is unlikely. At least I have never been successful. What I have found is that the lip seal that replaces the leather seal that the axle was designed to use needs to be almost perfect to keep from eating up the lip.
