Piston rings in AC 5040

The piston rings are burnt out of my AC 5040 from using too much starting fluid over the years. Previous user used starting fluid instead of fixing a bad starter.

I'm tired of choking on white smoke. My 5040 has the 3 cylinder Perkins diesel. To replace the rings, I know I'll have to split the tractor and block it up. Then, drain the oil, take off the bottom plate of the engine block, and pull out the pistons.

I have never done this kind of thing before. Is there anything in particular I should watch for or that I need to know? Are the pistons hard to get out and hard to get back in once the new rings are on? Once I get the bottom piece of the engine block i should be able to unbolt them from the crankshaft and slide them right out, correct? I appreciate any helpful advice.

Thanks,
Jeff

Manuals are available on this site; top left of this page: 'tractor manuals'.

The Allis 5040 Was made by the Uzina Tractor Work in Romania under license from Fiat. The engine is Fiat design, NOT Perkins.

you shouln't have to split the tractor to replace the rings. the oil pan will have to come off to take the connecting rod bolts loose. the cylinder head will have to come off and pull the pistons out the top of the engine, the crankshaft will be in the way on the bottom side. check at the top of the cylinder with your finger for a ridge. if there is one, it should be removed before taking out the pistons. cylinder should be at least honed. while you are there, it would be a good time to replace the rod and main bearings, hardly anymore labor to do that while it is torn down. also might want to replace sleeves if it has them, pistons might be worn too. not trying to scare you, but it could be more than just rings.

before you tear into it, go buy a repair manual and read it before you start. I & T are ok ones.
