I have (I was told) a '56 Allis Chalmers WD. The brake hasn't worked on one side in many years and the other side is weak. Can I replace the linings 'from the top', by taking the covers off at the location where they can be adjusted? or is it much more involved? Any help/advice would be appreciated. I'm thinking they should be able to be snaked out the top but maybe I'm being too optimistic.
thanks in advance.

I am one of the "drill and tap" people. If you get them out without drilling this or welding, the best thing to do isto drill and tap them while they are out. You can drill quite deep without getting to where the pin needs to be strong. they go through both the axle housing and the rear end/transmission housing here so there is maybe 1 1/2" of metal supporting them here so a 1" or 1 1/4" deep hole will not matter. You want the thread to be deep enough to be well past the neck in the pin which is a weak spot as far as pulling it. I used a 3/8-24 thread which leave more metal in the stud, which you will use for pulling it later, than a course thread

TD covered it all. Here's what I do re: welding- quarter by 2 by8 inch flat iron, drill 3/4 inch hole near one end. Slip it over pin and weld it. Heat of welding helps to loosen rust. Use it as a handle to turn pin back and forth. Hammer on it if necessary. Grind off the weld and reuse pin, with Never-Sieze.

In order to remove from the top, a pin must be removed from the bottom. You'll find this is under the axel in the bottom of the axel flange. On many tractors, this pin is very hard to remove. On one of mine, I loosened the axel to break it loose. Some drill a hole in the pin, thread it and use a slide hammer. Others weld something on the end to assist in pulling it. Once the pin is out, the job is pretty easy. You can buy completed brake shoes or linings that must be installed (rivited) on your existing shoes (after removing the old linings). I recommend you invest in an IT manual - it'll help a lot.

Thank you so much for the reply and information. I agree that I need a manual! A couple of further questions: After the pin is removed, is it true the linings can be removed from the top? Is it fairly easy or is there a trick to it? I'm thinking that if I loosen the adjustment fully that they will come loose and can be removed. true?

Well, I'm not positive that they will come out easily after pin removal. I recall having to take the pins on the top apart as well. And I also removed the brake rod at the bottom (this may not have necessary but it made it easier). But, yes, the linings do come out from the top once everything is loose. The manual will also describe adjustment. It isn't obvious.

Thanks again. I looked at the tractor last night and I did find the user's manual with the exploded picture of the brake assembly so I'm a bit more familiar. My last remaining question - Is the pin underneath to be removed under/behind the 'tab' on the axle housing? There is a tab/plate that looks to be removed with one bolt that I'm guessing is the location. The advice is great.

Yes, that is the pin. Not much to grab onto which is why some weld on the end or drill and tap. When I loosened the rear axel bolts, it broke mine loose - used a lot of penetrant as well. Of course, it could come out easily but I doubt it on a WD.
