I recently purchased an Allis Chalmers tractor for restoration, the person I purchased it from says its a 1944 series "C" but I don't know how he comes to this conclusion when it has no log book.
Their are sites on the internet that give serial numbers that relate to the year of manufacture, the number can be found on the transmtion case at the rear of the gear stick.
The number that is on mine, all be it very faint looks like FB74?445 ( not on any list I have seen) could it be that the tractors built up in the U.K had diferent serial numbers to those built in the USA.
I would be very greatfull if you could shed some light on this subject, or direct me to someone who is an authority on this matter.

i would guess it is a EB, or English B. they had the same basic layout as the American unit, but normally had Lucas electric. I believe the rear wheels were more truck type in appearance. I have only seen photos. There are a couple experts on this site or the "other" from England that can give you exact details. Later units were called ED40 or 272 and had Perkins diesels, but the first kit tractors had the Allis gas motor.

For those interested, this is a reply from a British Guy

This: C25308 is a Model C serial number from 1944. A serial number beginning with "EB" indicates a British built Model B. The first British built Allis-Chalmers tractor came off the production line in 1947/8. During the 1939-45 War the UK needed all the tractors it could get, traffic was "one way" from the US.

The serial number of yours would suggest that the components were produced in 1947 then shipped across to the UK assembly plant in Southampton. From 1947 the B was produced in the United Kingdom. Initially assembled at the Totton plant near Southampton from components imported from the U.S.A. Subsequently from locally sourced parts until in it's final form it was totally UK built at Essendine Leicestershire. Supply companies includes Bean Industries for castings, Rubery Owen for sheet metal and ENV or Moss for transmissions etc. A Perkins P3 diesel option, four speed transmission and hydraulics were distinct improvements but by 1955 the Ferguson TE 20 had set the standard and the Model B was no longer competitive, production ceased and it was replaced by the D 270.

There were Allis tractors assembled and manufactured in England. One model is called the EB. Serial numbers are separate from US manufacture. Quite a few Allis"s were exported to England as well. These would have concurrent serial numbers. Is the tractor a narrow front or a wide front? A narrow front should be a C. A wide front is likely a B. If a wide front, is the axle adjustable? Most British assembled B"s are adjustable.

Mine has a wide adjustable front, the back is wider than a "b" (so I am told)and a bow type draw bar.

Don't know about export tractors, but domestic Model C's have a number STAMPED in cast iron, near the shift lever. Would start with a 'C'. If you find a number there- it can be looked up on this site.

Thanks for that, but the number that I can see stamped at the rear of the gear shift not cast looks like ( very faint) FB 74 445
