Hello,

I just bought an Allis Chalmers 190XT which does jump out of 4th gear. All of the other gears are good even under a load. What is the best way to fix 4th gear. It only jumps out when you go downhill or let out of the throttle and get back in it really quick. It doesn't seem like 4th gear falls in very far. Is there a way to make it mesh together more? Any help is appreaciated.

Thanks,

Tony

This is not uncommon on the 190XT
Like the others said it could be the shift fork. The later ones used an improved shift rail that relocated the detent to allow further engagement. It required a differant coupling and a modified gear on the counter shaft.
The problem could also be that the coupler and transmission input shaft needs to be replaced

If you need to rework the detents, Bob Kuhn at Kuhn's Equipment repair in Oxford, New York can do it. Apparently some detents stop the gears when they are engaged half way. Call him at (607) 843-8440.

It could be a bad shift fork that is bent or worn down. Otherwise, the only correct fix will be tearing the tranny apart and replacing what is worn. There is a way to change the detents so that it engages the gear further, but don't know how to do that. Good luck
