i also add the fuzzy green & red pads that go underneath the battery cable ends. they have liquid material that prevents corrosion. i then spray with battery terminal coating. i could not start a backhoe once and traced it to cables. one day ok the next would not turn over due to internal battery cable corrosion.

JIm, darn good tip, I also use the felt fuzzies and then spray with that red anti corrosive stuff and they like NEVER go bad after all that. The coating (even if grease or vaseline were used, but its NOT recommended) prevents oxygen contact and the fuzzies help neutralize the acid I believe.

For tractor battery cables I recommend at least 0 or better yet 00 Gauge for 6 volt applications and at least 1 or better yet 0 Gauge for 12 volt. DO NOT us the thin wimpy 2 or 4 Gauge automotive type cables because you drop voltage and loose energy in the form of heat across the cables versus expending all the voltage and energy possible in the starter where its needed to crank the engine rapidly.

Our local implement dealers or battery shops and farm n tractor supply houses or even NAPA have the heavy rated battery cables for sale or even try a welding shop for those good heavy very flexible cables. I prefer the soldered and crimped ends versus the cheap n easy clamp ons.
