WD engine questions

I am in the process of restoring a WD engine. I am doing an in-frame overhaul and I had some questions. The engine still turns pretty easily with the hand crank. There is just a little bit of carbon on the top of the pistons and the top part of the cylinder where the piston doesn't reach. What is the best way to clean this without taking the whole thing apart. Would a wirebrush work or would it score the piston or cylinders too much? Also if the crankshaft and the underside of the engine look pretty good with no heavy grease deposits should I just put it back together without worrying about it. I already took the oil pump out, rebuilt it and reinstalled it. Should I just wipe the dust and cobwebs off of the flywheel where the inspection plate comes off? or do I really need to clean it thorougly. I am having the engine head professionally cleaned and when I get it back I will be able to finish the engine. Any help on this matter would be appreciated

Hate to sound mean, but why put money in the head and leave the bottom alone? It'll burn oil past the rings and lose oil pressure through worn rod and main bearings. You've gone this far, may as well do it right. PS, the engine has to come out to do the mains.

I Guess?
What is an in frame overhaul where the pistons are not removed?

I have been overhauling engines since the 1950"s and I guess I missed something along the line.

I agree...to me a rebuilt engine consists of just that...being completely rebuilt! Not just replacing a head gasket or redoing the head alone or re-ringing one piston or installing bearings on one rod, like I've seen done before! There seems to be a wide variable now-a-days defining rebuilt! LOL! Rick

You should be able to wire brush the carbon off, but don't push to hard or you can scrach up the top of the pistons

Welp - looking back..... in reply to Justin Squire, 04-27-2006 08:16:51
Did you get compression readings on all four cylinders? Was there any significant oil usage, leaks, or blue smoke? There are a bunch of unknowns here.

Now that you have it apart, you can check the bores for wear and roundness, and check the bearings for wear and clearance. That will tell you how far to go.
