I purchased a WD45 that I'm guessing was sitting for awhile. I don't know how long the tractor was sitting or if it was sitting at all. I guy told me I have stuck ring. Is there anyway to free the ring up other than tearing the engine down?

I woudl appreciate your comments.

Dave

Dave, if your not sure where the problem is, the best way to find out forsure is do a leak-down test on the engine!

Hi Dave, I"ve had the rings stick in a WD which I let sit for about a year without using. The tractor would start and run, but smoke and spit oil out the exhaust. I went to Fleet Farm an bought a gallon of Marvel Mystery Oil. I poored it down the cylinders for a few days and turned it over too similar to what OLD was talking talking about. After a few days I added about a half quart of MMO to the crankcase and thet it run for about 5 minutes and the smoke and spitting ended. Changed oil and it has been fine ever since.

I have had good luck with that Marvel Mystery Oil.
I have a C Farmall that would smoke after sitting for a coupla weeks and then one plug would foul out. Clean the plug and work her a little and the smoke would clear up. Read about that stuff on another board and thought it was worth a try. Starts good, pulls good with a good plug, and I didnt want to put rings in right now.
Put half of the can in about 2 gallon of gas into the tank and the other half in the crank case last spring. I have not had a fouled plug since. It set here at work in a warehouse all winter and when I got her two weeks ago she smoked a little on start up but I pulled the grain drill about 12 mile over to the house and then drilled two acres and the smoke all but cleared up and it has hot fouled a plug. I might use another can.

MMO is ok but for half the $$ the tranny fluid will do the same thing and you save some $$ useing it. I usto use MMO but found the tranny fluid worked just as good at 1/3 the cost

Fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and let it sit a few days. Then by hand turn it over till you can't turn it any more. Walk away and do the each day till you can turn it over through all 4 cylinders. What that does is forses the tranny fluid down past the rings. Most of the time that will free up the rings and if you have valve problem it also helps them

Dave, I wonder if you could share the symptoms. What is objectionable about the tractor? How did the previous owner decide that it had stuck rings?

The previous owner did not say it was stuck. Another gentleman lloked at my tracotr said it had a stuck ring so I am taking his word for it. If I take a compression check would that also indicate a stuck ring? the reason I ask is that I have compression checker.

?

I'd do the compression check. Nice info to know because it gives an indication of cylinder quality. If compression rings are stuck, you should detect that by readings below 100 or uneven readings. If an oil ring is stuck or broke and the compression rings are OK, you won't be able to tell that except that it would probably smoke. I asked the question because it is rare on a running tractor. There are symptoms of stuck rings. Usually they smoke and are hard to start. If you don't have any objectionable symptoms, I'd guess you are all right.
