Got the CA in last week runs good oil pan all globbed up with that blue stuff instead of a gasket. So I pulled the pan. It had a lot of crud in the bottom ,about 10 years worth. Unscrewed the filter, and the oil was sitting in the bottom.Took the mounting off the block ,oil ran out. Sprayed brake cleaner in; then real quick forced air in to the block. It came out in the crankcase up front somewhere.Made new gasket for filter mounting, new oil and filter. Started. No oil pressure, maybe a little, but the oil came out where I put the new gasket on the block.Where does the oil go when it leaves the filter and goes into the block? My book doesn't show where it goes, or how you clean this out.THANKS Bottomd

oil from the pump comes up the 1/4 inch pipe at the rear right corner of the motor. 15% of the oil goes thru the filter, shows pressure on the gauge and dumps back to sum thru the block hole. if you got the wrong filter or no steel tube inside the filter, you use up all the oil draining thru filter to sum an dget no backpressure, the gauge acutally measures the filters RESISTANCE to flow thru it. I dont know about Hastings, i use FRAM 159 or BALDWIN TM300.---- actual flow, the pump pushes 85% of the oil down a hollow cam shaft. there are holes thru the cam bearings to lube the main bearing caps. there are holes in the cam shaft that spray oil on the piston pins and bottom side of the pistons. there is a small tube external to the motor that goes to the head. the rocker arm shaft is alos hollow and carries some of the 85% oil to the valves for splash lube.--- you say you have pressure to the top end, but not on the gauge. i would guess the gauge is bad. you should have 12 psi when cold at hi throttle. you only get 10 psi on a good motor when hot at idle. some used motors only have 4-5 psi and run o.k.

The new filter is a hastings 51101 with hole in the middle but no stick but the steel tube is in place. The oil is driping from the rocker arms and a little out the small tube at the governor but none comes out the tee tword the distribator.I put air on the gage it went up and down. But when in operation it goes up about 3/16"not much.Sounds like I should take a look at pump could be worn. The oil is 10W30 so it should show higher press.Could I just turn the preshure up?

As I understand it, the oil goes to the camshaft and valve train. The bearings are splash feed. Don't know if the brake cleaner hurt anything. I recommend that you not use it again as it may affect your seals. Your lack of oil pressure probably results from the pump losing prime. Remove the small copper tube that connects to the bottom of the filter. Using a good oil can, squirt oil in this tube so that it goes back to the block (not the filter). The oil will lube the pump and fill the dip tube so it can regain prime. Then reconnect everything and you should have oil pressure if you have the right filter. The right filter is Fram 159 or equivalent. The filter must come with a stick down the center which is removed when the filter is installed.

And the correct filter will show rag waste or threads above a perforated metal plate on the bottom where the wood peg is inserted.
