im leaking oil from the rear main,what is involved in replacing this,what type of seal is this?

Farrin: To replace the rear main seal you will have to split the tractor between the engine and clutch housing. The seal is made out of felt in two halves. you will have to remove the base and remove the rear main bearing cap to replace the lower half of the seal. The upper half of the seal can be replaced after removing the clutch and flywheel. Make sure that you install the small gaskets that surrounds each end of the seal that goes between the bearing cap and the block or you could still have an oil leak after you are finished. After you split the tractor and before you start on the rear main seal, check the expansion plug on the rear of the block that seals the rear camshaft bearing bore to see if it is leaking there. Oil can leak from this plug and look like it is leaking at the rear main seal. It is much simpler to replace this plug if it is leaking than replacing the rear main seal.
