waterpump noise?

Howdy fellas, Was just wonderin if anyone had any kind of ideas on thi one, drove down the road a couple miles the other day to disc a couple acres for the nieghbor with my WD45 and snap coupler disc, tractor runnin great, and after a couple hrs put the ol boy up in fourth gear and headed down the road for the house, well I noticed a noise comin from the front of the tractor and it didnt do it on the road goin down there.I dont believe it was makin it in second or third when I was workin the disc. It only seems to be in high gear when i was runnin down the road, it didnt seem to make it when I got of the road and slowed to a lower gear, for what its worth seems to be comin from the front area of the motor,checked the waterpump and it definatly has some play in the bearing when I grab the fan and can wobble it. The tractor is runnin great and smooth dosent get hot when runnin or workin it no coolent leaks any where, just knockin kinda noise from the waterpump area, just thought Id check before droppin 100 bucks on a waterpump.The wd we have has a real nice tight fan on it when I compared the play in it. I bought a kit for my WD (and my D-17 and my Oliver 70 and...) which is a lot cheaper than a new pump. Though, the rebuilding is a difficult job (even a little chancey). If you can afford a new pump, buy it.

Sounds like you've diagnosed the problem.

Something further you might do is to take fan belt off, and with one hand resting on the waterpump housing, spin the fan blade with the other hand. You should be able to feel the "bad" bearings.

The seal can still be good (for a while) and the bearings be bad. Look underneath at the weephole to see if there's any noticable leakage.
