Had a driveline sling apart and it destroyed the other driveshaft and the hydraulic pump as well. Replaced the broke stuff primed the pump and started her up. Has no power steering, no transmission movement and a noise in the upper end of the dropbox. (Like a dry bearing thats gone bad.) Is it possible for something to have broken when the pump was broken by the driveshaft. The spline coupler looked ok and had no movement to it. The pump is used but it acts like its not turning at all. Can you tell anything by removing the plate on top of the drop,( the one with 10 bolt holding it on). Also the PTO driveshaft wont engage. Does the pump above the CV joints have to be good for the PTO driveshaft to turn? So many ?"s and so little time. Thanks, davids

the top shaft and hyd pump on the back of the dropbox run ALL THE TIME.. if that upper shaft isnt turning your problem may be in the splined coupler inside that connects the shaft from the engine to the top gear in the back of the drop box which drives both the hyd pump and the top drive shaft...

note.. that front hyd pump, under the cab on the drop box supplies pressure for the transmission and wet clutch... the hyd pump on the rear end is for hyd remotes and steering and is driven from the top shaft if the shaft is turning and you dont have steering or pto engagement either the pump is bad or some gears on the rear pump drive were shelled otherwise...

i would bet that the coupler was worn and the slung driveshaft finished it off... my father and i had one that worked fine one day.. came back next moring to finish planting wheat.. and wouldnt move.. no top shaft movement.

speak with your allis dealer they can give some insight and a parts explosion if you dont have a parts book

my father and i have 2 8550's and a 7580 i hope i shed some light on your problem

good luck

sounds like thats it. Now the BIG question, how hard is it to get to the collar? Can it be changed through the rear after pulling the hydraulic pump and the "round plate" that the pump is mounted on or is it one of those pull the whole transmission type things? Is the plate on top of the dropbox going to get me any where or is that too easy? Thanks for the advice. davids

one way to check is to try and put it in gear it should grind slightly from the drag of the clutch but when in gear it will not move and nothing on the back of the drop box will be turning. and the trans pressure light should stay ON. if there is no grinding at all then it is possible that the torque limiter is bad but i would place my bets on the other. there is a soft plug on the back of the dropbox case.. i would pull it and check also.. my father and i were told that the torque limiter was bad only to pull the engine and discover the problem was in the top of the dropbox bleh

if that is the problem you have to remove the rear dropbox cover. it can be done without removing the cab but both drivelines have to be removed and the upper hyd pump has to be removed. the rear cover is cast and about 200 pounds so youll need some help. if i remember correctly it was about 800$ for the coupler, new top gear, soft plug, and gaskets...

i wouldnt want to guess the labor at a dealership
