Here's the readers digest version. I came into possession of a model B about a year ago (actually, a C trans & engine that was bastardized with a B front end and tires). The engine was stuck, rusted up. I finally got around to playing "whack a piston" with it, cleaned up the cylinders, valves, & everything else. Put it all back together, have 110psi on 3 cylinders, 85-90 on the other (had to do some major valve work on that one, so I'm surprised it's that good). She fired right off, just burns a little oil, and runs very well. The problem is that one rear rim is shot...rusted, corroded badly and has been welded on many times over the years. The tire on it is a 10-24, the original size as far as I know, and is rotted too. The other rim is good, but with a 11-24 tire that is good, but not great. The only dealer around that has anything, sells "new" rims that are a direct bolt on to the hub, no beads and clamps. They want around $100 for the rim and $140 each for new 10-24 tires, or $175 for a new 11-24. Is that a fair price for the rim? Does anyone have any experience w/ that type of bolt on rim? Does anyone know of any "used" rims in the SW Michigan area for a B? Can I get away w/ mixing a 10-24 & 11-24 tire or should I match them? If so, is the 11-24 too big, or should I stick w/ the 10-24? Keep in mind that if/when I get around to paying for the tractor, it'll be $500, plus it includes a 5' brush hog. I'm assuming the tractor will run for some time to come, but don't want to get too much invested in this thing just yet. Any thoughts/ideas are greatly appreciated. You guys are the best resource I've found for my little project!

OK, I understand why they don't want to support the other Allis site, and undercut themselves, but I do agree that there are so many diffences in this site and the other that they would do better to work together... but that is my idea and I have no financial stake in either site. I must say I enjoy reading from both sites and have learned so much. Keep up the good work.

By the way, does anyone have a good source for used 11.2x24 tires?

Steve

So what is with this site...if you post a link to the other Allis site, it won't let you post?

Hi Steve,

YTMag is in the business of selling aftermarket tractor parts in their on-line store here. The other site you mention doesn't sell tractor parts as a core business but does host advertising from numerous dealers/businesses who are competitors in the same tractor parts area. If you owned YTMag as a business, would you permit free advertising for your competitors by permitting unrestricted linking to their advertising in your own Q&A forums such as this one? I think the answer is no and it's the reason the link doesn't work. It's a site policy. If you wish an official response, I suggest you ask Kim, the owner of this site, in the "Site Comments" forum.

Actually, Rod, most of what you said is correct, and we need to honor the parameters established here by our host. You are misleading, however, when you create the perception that both sites have the same range of products for or sale, either by the site itself or by advertisers. For purely Allis Chalmers parts and services, for example, this site offers only a FRACTION of products and services offered on the other site. For this narrow scope of product, it is akin to comparing Home Depot or Lowes to a mom and pop hardware store.

We need to honor the rules set forth by this site, and support this site whenever we can, it's an awsome site. We also need to recognize and accept that competition is a fact of life, and we are all free to make choices. If a specific product isn't offered for sale on this site, it shouldn't be a mortal sin to help someone find out where they can buy it.

Yoder and Fry in Archbold Ohio has the bolt on rims out in the auction yard. As far as I know they dont offer them for auction but I bought two pair of them over a year ago and I paid 60 bucks each for them. The are about 6 miles west of Miller tire. 1 mile west of the center of Archbold on route 2 and a hop skip and a jump North. Google them if you are close. I bought tires there as well at a cheaper price.

I have a real good rim off a C allis that I would sell and I'm sure it would be cheaper then what you have found so far. Drop me an e-mail

old,

I sent you an email on the 25th or 26th using the "send email" link. Not sure if you got it or not, but I'm interested in hearing more about the rim off of that C that you're willing to sell.

Thanks

You should probably double check your tire sizes - Miller tire Link has a good explanation but the current sizes include a decimal - i.e. 12.4-24 or 11.2-24 while the old sizes were 10-24 or 11-24 and very old sizes were 8.25-24 or 9.00-24 - as I recall the 12.4-24 is same tire as old 11-24 which if you go back to the 30's was a 9.00-24. If you had 10-24 as original, the replacement is 11.2-24 which I think is common on B and C while the 12.4-24 is more likely found on CA.

You are correct ACEd, a 10-24 is the same as an 11.2-24 and the 11-24 is the same as a 12.4-24. Each tire has both numbers stamped on the sides, I was just going by the older numbers I had found off of original documents.

The "loop" rims used on Farmall A's (I think that's what you're referring to here) are great for a tractor that is not being restored to accurate factory specs. Less noodling around than the A-C clamps. Tire size is your preference, but they should always be matched. Also, the rim width should be correct for the tire size you choose. They vary in width usually in 1/2" increments. $100 for new loop rims, depending on width, is in the right neighborhood. Go to any tire dealer website to match your rim width to the tire you choose. Hope that helps, and keep at it. An Allis B/C combination is not a bad tractor, and worth your effort.
