Bob has the plan on the timing. the flywheel mark is on the side of the tractor, looking thru the 1 inch dia hole. time at TDC. point will just open at that point. if you got a mag, listen for the "snap". 40wt is probalby o.k., but a little thick for cold startup. i prefer 10w30 just like your old car or truck. multiweight are better now adays compared to straight wt.

Either the mag or the distributor will "fire" #1 cylinder AT or VERY LITTLE before TDC. Setting the initial timing more advanced than than will cause "kickback" that will damage YOU when you try to crank it, or the starter, if it is electric start.

The centrifugal advance in the distributor will then advance gradually as the engine is speeded up, to "running timing", depending upon the "advance curve" built into the advance mechanism.

With the mag, as soon as the engine speeds up enough so the impulse coupling on the mag "drops out", the timing advances ALL AT ONCE to running timing. How much it advances is designed into the impulse, and is called the "impulse lag angle".

Can't really help with the timing thing other then tell you to get an I-T manual which tells you how to do what your doing. The 40 weight oil in the summer is just fine, I use that and even 50 weight in the summer depending on the tractor

I'd say the 40 weight is just fine, I run it in my C which has the same engine as your B. My self I like the oil preassure to be a little higher then to have it to low and have things not getting oil
