We recently purchased an allis chalmers 190xt diesel with a 2800 series engine. Upon getting it home we found that it acts as if the clutch is slipping in high range. The thing that does not make sense to me is that the engine pulls down when it slips. On our other tractors this did not happen when their clutches went. I have no experience with allis chalmers so i need help. Another thing that maybe related is the hydrolic oil looks terrible. If anyone could give me some advice it be greatly appretiated, so at least i know where to start. Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys for all the help. My next step is to buy a shop manual to see what will be involved. Would the power director clutch cause it to slip or will it need the main clutch replaced also? And it does have a 2800 engine that runs great, lots of power no smoke, we noticed the exhaust hole had been altered and no air cleaner out the top like others i've seen, must be a replacement? Anyways thanks for the help it should make life slightly easier than going in blind.

It probably needs the power director plates and sidcs replaced.

The others have it pegged on the clutch problem. It may also have incorrect oil in the hydraulic system which would cause problems.
You said the 190XTD had a 2800 engine. It should have the 2900 engine with the turbocharger.

You may have a bad hi/low ( Power Director ) clutch. Dad's 190 had engine over heating for years. We could not figure out why. He4 was also having hi/low problems. The tractor finally got so bad it would not move. When we split the tractor the PD clutch was shot. From the look of the hydraulic sealing rings on the PD clutch we were getting pressure into the low and hi side at the same time. When we fixed the PD the engine heating problem went away. If you get pressure to both sides of the clutch it is like the transmission is in two gears at the same time and will load thing down and can cause a lot of heat.

Another thing i noticed was that i could not shift the hi/lo into nuetral. It never leaves low. Does this conclude it's the power director clutch for sure? thanks for your help

You may have a valve or linkage problem. Dad's problem was the center sealing ring of the three rings on the clutch was shot. I think this was cause by a worn housing the sealing rings sealed against.
