in MT determine the probable value for a D-17. He's selling, not buying, but the siutation is so complicated I'll skip the details. Let's just say he wants to be fair but not foolish.

The tractor has a WF, a hydraulic loader and was used for the last several years for light work around a horse facility: moving hay and manure. It ran about 3 months ago but does not start now.

Tin is complete and very faded, but basically straight.

I usually post a bit on the Farmall board, but hope someone will be able to help with a ballpark figure.

John mentioned the difficulty of pricing a tractor that does not run. Local sale a few years ago had a D17, at best a series III, rod through the block. I thought it was worth a grand- good rubber, good sheet metal, etc. Went for over twice that. Even if your engine is loose, could still be bad crank, etc. Post the serial number to determine series. Series IV is much better technology than earlier ones. Getting it running would be a big advantage. Lots of Series III with good rubber, running wsell, etc. go for 3 to 4 grand.

Is the tractor a series 4 or does the loader have it`s own hydraulic pump off the front of the engine? How are the tires and tin work? Running tractors sell a whole lot better than those that don`t. Usually worth while to get it running. If it does`t run a buyer won`t know if the problem is a broken crank or something a whole lot cheaper, so you have to assume the worst. Also when tractor doesn`t run, you don`t know how the transmission is, so you have to assume it`s bad. When you have to assume the worst about everything, you can`t give much for it. Sorry, this won`t help him price it, but there are just too many unknowns to be able to make a guess above scrap price.
