Thanks all for the advice received about weather to purchase the WD or the 45. I bought the WD for $600 with minor problems. The biggest issue is that the lift arms will not go down. The controller seems stuck in the down position and the lock pin is retracted so it should be down, right? Nope its up and even standing on them does not budge them. My question is can the controller be taken off and rebuilt by "yours truly" or do I just buy another. 2nd question is can I determine what Crankshaft is in this motor without tearing it down. It runs great and was rebuilt some years ago SO I am hoping that the 45 crank was installed. Thanks ALL

Old, If you have the latches that go on the ends of the lift arms I would be interested. I have a WD that came without them and am looking for some. You can E mail me at [email protected] if you like. Just put Allis Chalmers in the subject so I won't delete your message with all the spam I get.

Take care, Tom

Sorry don't have the snap couplers either. Seems like people loved to throw them away for some reason

The first thing I would do is to disconnect both cylinders from the valve body and see if the lift arms go down. I would do this with the tractor off for some time - over night at least. If the cylinders aren't stuck, disconnecting the line should allow them to go down. If they do go down even a little, reconnect. The problem is definitely in the valve.

Then, check to make sure the linkage is correctly hooked up and moving correctly. When all of the external causes are checked and verified, it is necessary to get into the valve and pump. I recommend that you buy an IT manual or go to Allis and get the WD repair manual. There are a lot of small parts in this thing and can easily get mixed up.

I had a CA that had a bad pump and control. When I got it apart, I discovered that there was a spool missing in the control valve. Without a good manual, I would never have figured that out.

Looks like you got your money's worth. That old tractor, if properly cared for, will still do a lot of work. Tim

Looks like you got more than half that in rear tires alone. I"m sure someone can help with your hydraulic problem and has a way to figure out which crank you have.

Wouldn't it work to check 'throw' of the crank by using a long wire through the spark plug hole, set the engine at top and bottom dead center (marking the wire). Marks should be 8 inches apart on a WD crank, 9 inches apart on a WD45 crank. Also, I don't see any reason to wait any time at all after disconnecting the cylinder hoses, like another poster says, to try pushing the arms down. I think he's right to suspect a valve problem, but I'd first make sure that the ABCD screws on the pump are set as described in the operator manual, as well as the linkage from the Snap-Coupler.

Wow great idea on the crank measurement but wouldn"t it be 4 or 4.5 inches? Why did you double the didtance? And I don"t know what an ABCD screw is but I anm sure that I am going to find out. Thanks

I picture 'throw' as the distance between centerlines of the rod journal and the main journal- so I just now went to the shop to measure a WD crank- you are right, it should not be doubled- centerlines are two inches apart. Throw would be the total travel of the piston, (stroke), and 8-9 inches of stroke would be very long. Regarding the four screws, ABCD- they adjust the hydraulic system for what you want to do- delayed lift on front and rear cultvator gangs, weight transfer, etc. Normally there is a decal on the battery box detailing settings, but your tractor does not have the factory box. The same info is in the operator manual- good idea for you to get that for proper oils, ID of controls, basic maintenance, etc. Your tractor picture shows a lot of oil on the right rear wheel- likely the seal on the axle needs replacement- make sure the tractor is securely blocked when bumping the stub axle out- you'll be working underneath it to get at snap rings that hold the gear to the axle. Congrats on getting a good tractor at a reasonable price.
