I have been following this forum for a while now and there seems to be many knowledgeable folks out there. So here's my question: I want a WD45 and the 43HP that they offer. I have a chance to buy a WD real cheap that needs a few this done. Can I do some simple mods to get the HP up on the WD? Will the WD still pull a 3 bottom plow and my 10' disc? Maybe I should buy her, slap a coat of paint on it and sell to buy the 45. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If the WD was overhauled during its 50+ years, there is a fair chance that it has a WD45 crank and pistons in it. The cost of the up grade wasn"t that much when doing a major overhaul anyway. If you can buy a good running WD for under $1000, I`d have to say go for it. If you find it doesn`t have quite the power you need, you won"t have much trouble moving it, to move up to the `45. You should have plenty of WD45`s to chose from for less than $2000.

There are rebuild kits available with 4 1/8 cylinders and higher compression. That puts the horsepower pretty much the same. You can also put WD-45 pistons and a crank in the WD engine and they are the same.

The WD won't pull a 3 bottom plow in all conditions in second gear.

It is usually a lot easier to wait for what you want. I've seen several WD-45's sell for around $1500 on Ebay lately - probably require some travel and hauling.

Tough call. If the WD is in good shape it will do what you want. My Dad plowed for many years with a WD (3-14's) before getting a WD45 and the WD was almost always used to pull the tandem disc. This was in southern Minnesota soil which is pretty easy soil to work with.

The extra power of the WD-45 is very nice and most of the WD's didn't have the traction booster/snap coupler hitch for the Allis implements while it is pretty standard on the '45's.

So you have a decision to make. Are you sure the WD's problems are something you can fix yourself? If not the repair cost will drive the price higher.

Should be able to get a good WD-45 for around $2000.00, maybe $2500.00 for a REAL nice one.
