CJIM, if you have good oil pressure after priming and stays good while running I would think that you have a pressure relief ball or pressure relief spring problem. When the engine is not running the the pressure relief ball and spring act as a check valve and hold oil in the oil pump body. Ball could be rusted or pitted and/or the spring could be broken or tired. Also could be the ball seat might be pitted. There is a little pin that holds the spring and ball in place and it could have come loose or something. Dale

i have a 49 c with the same problem. i was told to check the pickup tube for crack. or to pull the pump and check the pressure relief valve. tractor engine had been rebuilt before i bought the c. i had to put it together, oil pump, flywheel, clutch. etc. i checked the pump before mounting. took it apart, cleaned, checked everything, setup clearance on rotor with new gaskets, and still i have the problem. now i must drop pan to check tube and possibly split tractor again.
