This tractor ran for about two hours after a long Michigan winter. It was shut off, then would not re-start. It appears that there is no spark. What is the best way to determine if I do have spark? I attempted to ground a plug while cranking. Will this method help me identify an ignition problem? Thanks much.

Do you here the mag click as you turn it over? If you do not hear it just hit the mag with the crank or a hammer. Common sence is a factor, but you can smack it pretty good to get the impulse to catch. Simple terms is a big spring turns the inside of your mag to make a spark at full RPM's. When cranking at slow speed a trip holds the spring drive and lets the spring snap it (like fast RPM) to create enough spark. With a mag you should easy hear a snap when starting. Dave NE IA

Thanks for all the input, I will pay special attention to the mag. This tractor is at my in-laws place and I will give it a go this weekend. Many thanks!

Take a good spark plug and hook it up to one of the plug wires and ground it on the engine. Then turn the engine over and watch for a spark at that plug. May take a few turns of the crank to see a spark. If no spark I'd check the point, condenser and cap and rotor. Is it a mag system or a battery type ignition. Both can have differant types of problems so it would be nice to have a little more info

Thanks for your help HF. Please be patient with me. I"m not afraid to get my hands dirty but I"m not very familiar with this tractor. I beleive it"s a magneto type ignition, how can I tell for sure?

Does it have a 4 plug wire type of cap or is it a 5 wire type cap. If the cap has 5 wires one of them will go to the coil and that would be a battery ignition system. If the cap only has 4 wires comeing off it then you have a mag system. Either way you probably need to replace the points and condenser
