Help. I just looked at an Allis Chalmers WD45 and have no idea of it's value. It had been sitting for about a year but it started up pretty quick with a fresh battery. The engine idled pretty good but had a slight miss at high RPM. It sounded like electrical (plug wire/plug). Overall it sounded good with no smoke. One manifold stud is broken just below the nut.
The sheet metal if pretty good with a few dings here and there and some rust, but nothing serious. Paint was done by a none painter. The power steering leaks a little and it has a Chevrolet PS pump in place of the original. No other leaks noted. It shifts and drives fine. It has a 3 point hitch that goes into the quick coupler with levelers to the lift arms. The lift works perfect and no leaks. There is some kind of home made rear (3 point mounted) trip bucket. The tires are good to very good but the rears are not on original spinout wheels. The owner said the wide tires and wheels came off of a combine. The wheels are made like car wheels with the centers welded to the rims. Is the wheel thing a problem? They sure look heavy and strong and are in excellent condition. The asking price is 1200.00 but the owner ask for an offer so the price would be less. Is this a fair price.....I really don't know and any advice is appreciated.

Five years ago, I bought a narrow front 1952 WD from the original owner in St.James, Mo. for 600 bucks. It was running but with bad rubber all round and no 3 point conversion. Spent another 1500 to get it right, but it's proved its worth to me several times over. I asked the farmer why he only bought Allis, and he replied, "It was the closest dealership!"

That is a good price, but,if you want to add value when you purchase it,get eithr the orig. spin outs in 12-28 or 13-38. it makes it more valuable. sounds like a real deal to me. i'd say buy it!

$1200 is a good price for a running WD45. The rear wheels are not an issue unless you want to be "correct" or will be in row crops. I have 18.4x26 rears on one of my tractors and they are actually taller than the 28's.

Sounds like a pretty fair deal. The wheel issue won"t matter much if you aren"t going to row crop. Even then it might not be. Combine tires and wheels are a bunch cheaper than replacing rusted out rims with originals. Good tire are worth near $500. Make sure the transmission is good by driving it down a good grade in each gear and backing off the throttle quickly.

Price is not out of line, but the wheels are an issue. Combine wheels are likely 26 inch instead of 28- slows down the ground speed, plus are not adjustable width. Changing to original factory wheels and tires would be spendy. Important mechanical issue is transmission as well as condition of engine. Check the serial number. WD45 started at 146607, and the engine does not have a bolt-on plate on the right side. Many parts have been interchanged over the years. WD45 decal means squat- go by the serial number on the differential. MUST have the curved shift lever and be above 146607.

$1200 is a great price around Western NY for a WD45, just make sure you are looking at a WD45. You can get spin out rims and tires, all depends on what you need them for. I have them, but have never needed to change the width. My wife loves ours for raking hay. If you decide not to buy it, I would consider buying it. E-mail me with your location. [email protected]

Thanks to everyone for the replies. John in IL, you are right about the tire size. The seller also has a WD for sale with spinout wheels and you can see the combine wheels and tires on the WD45 are a little taller and wider.
John in MO, I hadn't tried going down a grade and letting off to check the transmission but I definitely will.
John, what part of Missouri are you in. I live in the MO Ozarks, near Piedmont and Clearwater Lake.
As Bob and JMS suggested, I will look for the serial number to confirm its's a WD45. I figured it was because the power steering looks original (except the pump). I'll also look at the engine to see if I can determine if it's the original. I'll look to see if it has or doesn't have the bolt on plate on the right side of the engine. Since there is a WD sitting pretty close, I can compare the two engines.
Bob in NY, I live pretty far from you but if I don't buy it I'll be happy to get you in touch with the owner and take some pictures for you.
The seller also has a WD for sale (both tractors are not advertised). This was just a local word of mouth thing. The WD price is 600.00. It sounds pretty good but I didn't drive it. It also has been converted to 12 volts but there is no alternator ( the guy just runs it off of a charged battery), the rear tires are up, but very weather cracked. The seller said the right rear wheel isn't very good. It has a the original drawbar and also a homemade three point hitch that uses chains instead of levelers. The lift and hydralics are fine. I didn't look close at the WD but I don't think it had any leaks at all. I think it was also painted with a mop.
Again, thanks for all the info and if you think of anything else I should check, just let me know. My regular email address is [email protected]

NE part of the state. $600 is a pretty good deal for a WD also. There is a lot more than that in parts on one if you ever need them or want to move it that way.
