Tried to adjust the float heaight did not make any difference!!!!! !!!! Also want to know what the correct installation instructions are for the magneto to distributor conversion bought it from walts tractor parts he is very nice
recommended this sight to me also.Does it go in the same way the mag does at the fire mark on the flywheel or do you use the center mark?? Please help very frustrated

Your smoke problem is caused by a defective needle and seat in the carb. Get a rebuild kit for your Zenith carb that contains a needle and seat (some don't). Clean everything very well and install the parts. Float height should be described with the kit. If there are no instructions, make float top level level when the seat is closed. This also corresponds with it being parallel with the carb cover.

If your tractor is running, I see no advantage to a distributor. I think the mag works as well, uses no battery power, goes longer between tune-ups. But it is your choice (I'd leave the mag).

I've never found the flywheel marks to be helpful. I wonder why no manufacture ever marked the flywheel with the word fire - always holes and lines - with Allis sometimes it is two holes.

Anyway, I always turn the tractor with the crank and find the hand crank position at top dead center on #1 with a wire through the #1 plug hole. Then I put my finger on the plug hole and find the top dead center after compression (crank at same postion as for TDC). Then install the mag or distributor at fire postion #1 (rotor at about 10:30). You can get a closer approximation (this isn't necessary) of the fire position by putting an ohmmeter across the points. When the ohms go from zero to high when you rotate the mag or distributor, that is the fire point. If you use the ohmmeter method, remove the condensor from the circuit when running the test. Snug up the screws and start the tractor. Adjust distributor until it runs best.
