going to try to pick up a GMC 1978-60 truck that has not ben run in 4 years, gas tanks look dry.
it has a cold blooded 427. what do you think we do first to get it running? I think it has the west coast air brakes.

Thanks boys I`ll let you know how it works out, on fords I have pulled the dis. and used a allen wrench on a rod driven with a cordless drill to turn over the oil pump to get oil to the good spots before turning the motor over, I almost forgot that part.

Been sitting 4 yrs.-----

1) remove plugs spray a good big shot of WD-40 into each cyl. 2) put in new plugs 3) remove valve covers pour 1/2 qt. oil over each bank of rocker arms and liftrs...replace covers,with old gaskets.... 4) put 3 - 4 gallon of gas in tank.... 5) crank it over several times toget dry parts lubricated and fuel pumped to the carb.... 6) remove air cleaner,Pour about 1/2 cup gas in carb....have some one try to start ...
you may have to repeat # 6 until eggine is running....if you get a back fire that results in a carb. fire cuntinue cranking engine ,that will suck fire down in side....stuff a big bath towel over carb. and stop cranking..... 7) it should have it ready to run.....

Check ignition. If it has points, they should be clean and open and close as engine is turned over. Pull the plugs and either replace them or clean and gap them. Check that you are getting spark to the plugs. Dump a few table spoons of gas in the carb and turn it over. If it starts and runs even for a couple of seconds, fill tank - dump a few more table spoons in the carb - crank. Repeat until it runs.

If it doesn't start a bit in the first trial, do a compression check to determine cause.
