D15 Jumps Out Of Gear

Thanks for all your inputs on this problem. One final question....Do they jump out of gear in both high and low range? I am going to look at the tractor next week and will check it out. I don't even know if it has power steering, is that a good thing that works well? I don't know if I understand what the Traction Booster does or what the gage indicates. I just read about it in a tractor book.

Shouldn't matter if it is in high or low. If it has the problem, it will do it in both. Allis power steering is pretty good. Traction booster works with Allis implements and transfers some of the implement weight to the rear tractor wheels to increase traction.

How does the Traction booster transfer weight to the rear wheels? I don't understand how the system works and what the gage is measuring. Is this system on all D15's?

I believe it is on all D-15 tractors. The tractor hydraulic arms have a controlled pressure in the cylinders which are are therefore essentially lifting the implement. This lifting action puts additional weight on the rear and, due to lever action this removes weight from the front wheels and puts this weight on rear as well. The gauge is a pressure gauge on the cylinders showing minimum weight transfer to maximum weight transfer. There are no units on the gauge. Videos that I have seen say it can increase the weight on the rear wheels by 30% (15% from the implement and 15% from the weight off the front tires). There is a lever near the steering column that allows the operator to adjust this weight transfer. If the lever is put too high, it may pull the implement out of the ground. This design works best with a turnover plow as this type of plow's natural tendency is to go deeper and deeper due to the inclined plane on the plow shear and laythe. It takes significant force to hold it at any level - this force converts to weight.

Its essentially the same thing as draft control on a 3 point hitch- increased pull on the snap coupler under the tractor causes the lift arms to raise the implement slightly to reduce the pull- decreased pull causes the lift arms to go down so pull will increase. This "draft" sensing is adjustable by the lever mentioned above. On most 3 points, the draft is sensed by the top link pushing forward against the top mount on the tractor (plow pulls backward, 3 point attachment pins act as fulcrum, top link goes forward).
