Manifold Gaskets

When I took my manifold off of my D17 there were paper gaskets between the metal rings and the manifold but none between the metal rings and the head. Is this correct? Some of the maintanence on this tractor was wrong in other instances and I want this to be correct. There are enough paper gaskets for both in the new set. Thanks in advance Jim

Paper (or asbestos) goes next to the manifold, metal goes on next. Easy to install if you put some grease on parts to hold them in place if the engine is upright.

The metal rings that come with the gasket sets are what they call retainers. They are cup shaped and I think they are there to hold the gaskets from slipping out of place when reinstalling the manifold.

I've often wondered about this as well. I've seen it in every gasket set for a WC, or WD (D17 is the same). When I look at the parts manual, it indicates that the kit includes two each of everything. But it only shows one each installed. The IT manual says nothing about it at all - must be too elementary. On everyone that I have rebuilt, I placed the asbestos washer against the manifold and than placed the metal washer over the asbestos. I used the wide ones for the exhaust ports and the round for the intake. My theory was that the wide one would help dissapate heat from the exhaust seal. But it is only a theory.

You should lay a straight edge over the manifold openings to see that all the openings are at the same height. Also examine the metal to see that it is solid next to the seal area. If it it very thin or uneven, I'd have the surfaces machined flat. I've fixed a couple of manifolds by milling the surface . Also look for holes in other places of the exhaust manifold. The intake generally stays as new.

round gaskets are for wc,wd, and intake on all, gaskets with tabs are for exaust on wd45, d-17,gleaner e, ect.

actually, i think the intake ports should be .020" higher than exaust, to ensure sealing. everyone i've seen is that way, i cut mine with the step, my brother cut his flush, we'll see whos leans out!

Thanks Denny !!!! IT just seemed silly that they sent gaskets for both sides when they did not need to. As you say IT must have thought it too elementary. I wonder if the extra gaskets were to help even the manifold if one or more were not straight? I'll make sure its even and put it back metal to metal on the head side. Jim
