A friend of mine thinks he has a WD45, but is not 100% sure as there are no markings on the sheetmetal. Looks like it has been painted with a paint brush. What should be real indicators of it being a WD45? It is 6volt, carb on the left, has aftermarket 3pointhitch, starter mounts to the rear center of the engine. I want to make sure of what he has before I order a carb kit for it and a filter bowl assemebly, plus some wiring would not hurt. Has a real wobbly seat which I think some rubber bushings might help and the shock is shot.

This is not a reply to Mike, it is a request for help on the same subject, hope Mike does not mind. I need help to identify the year of my Dad's AC. The number I find on left side of engine isWD253892GA. Can anyone tell me what year this tractor is?

That is the engine number, not the serial number. Most charts go by serial number.

Biggest thing is if it has a plate on the right side of the engine that bolts on or it doesn;t have the plate. If it has a side cover its a WD engine if it doesn't have a side plate then its a WD-45 engine. Either engine will bolt right up on either tractor. I have all 3 types, WC, WD, and WD-45 if you look at them they all look almost the same unless you look close.

When you speak of this "plate", is it the plate that runs the entire length of the block. Looks out of place, I think 4 bolts along the top, close to the head and spark plugs? It"s NOT a small plate like an inspection plate under the flywheel, used to check the flywheel markings, is it? By golly I think I have a WD. The transmission is another issue. Straight shifter, curves as it goes into the "boot" at less than 90 degrees, has a release (a long rod) of some sort runs the entire length of the shifter, maybe for reverse?

Yes, it is the big plate on the side.
The shifter you describe is on the WC. Yes, the long rod along side is for reverse. The WC would have hand brakes,too.

Everybody gets hung up on the shifter when the real difference between a WD and a WD-45 is the engine. The WD block has a full length rectangular steel plate on the right side. The WD-45 block does not.

Check the serial number. It's located on the rear of the tractor by the left brake housing. There is a hole, should be stamped just under that on a flat spot. Think the Wd's started with WD XXX, thw WD45 was WD45 XXX

All WD45`s have a curved shifter and some WD`s do also. This subject has been covered about a million times, look down the list a page or two I`m sure you will find 2 or 3 simular discussions.

WD-45 has a curved shifter on trans. , Wd has a straight shifter WC is made like wds and wd 45s but it has hand brakes and the back wheels are not spin out wheels . Hope that helps you .
