I found me a three point sicle mower that I'm thinkin about gettin.I've never used one and have no knowledge on them,I had a pull behind(horse drawn)and had to use low and first gear in my 46 Jeep.If I do get it I'll be using it behind my WD45,my question is, will the tractor be slow enough in first and if so and how much throttle,1/4,1/2,3/4?
Thanks in advance
Dave

not just sickle but good ledger plates too! and the angle the sickle bar is tilted at. will affect the mowing. i 've used a ac#3 for years. with a wd . great combination!an operators manual will be invaluable. also go to you local farm supply store like tsc and look at the new guards with ledger plates and check out new sickle sections so you can se what condition you'res are in. and be careful. lot's of guys missing digits out there. i also oiled the sickle bar every so often while mowing.

You should run the engine so the mower sees the rated 540 PTO speed. The is the speed the mower was designed to run at. Use the tractor transmission to adjust ground speed.

I never used a WD for mowing hay or stubbles and mowing ditch banks is a different story. I have mowed many many acres of hay and stubbles with my Olivers. I run around 4 mile per hour at one notch past half throttle most of the time. Conditions change and will cause to drop a gear or more. Once at it you can tell where you need to be as far as throttle and ground speed. Trash in the ditches will be your biggest problem. Your tractor will be slow enough. You will just have to learn to pop it out of gear as you stop to keep from plugging up.

Boy, do I remember as a kid having to go along the swath line behind my Dad"s "B" with a fork to make sure there was nothing to clog up the mower on the next pass. Then, "downed" hay was always a problem with the "B" too; no independent PTO. The WD-45 is a pleasure as you can stop the tractor with the hand clutch and the mower will keep right on cuttin".

I see you understood the pop out of gear thing. When the Oliver 77 was on the baler and the Oliver 66 had the cultivators on, I would get stuck with the Farmall M to mow with. Ahh, never mind. I dont talk like that anymore. It made you love live power takeoff"s.

ground speed and engine speed depends on how thick the hay/grass is, heavy stuff full throttle 1st gear, light stuff 7/8 throttle 2nd or 3rd. all this hinges on SHARP sickles.
