FMJ Magneto on a 40 WC

OK, this is driving me nuts. I ran my WC last fall into the garage, ran rough but I knew I'd be working on it this winter. Started it a few times to move it around. Went to start it a few weeks ago and nothing. No spark. Pulled the mag off and noticed the circlip on the big cap shaft had moved out of the groove. The fiber gear could move up and down. Fixed the circlip. Timed everything per Dewey's article. On my "C" you could spin the coupling by hand and see a spark. Can't do it on this one. New wires and plugs. New condenser, points, rotor and top cap from Steve at B&B Circuits. Still no spark, won't even pop. The ponts are set @ .020. I'm assuming that's at the high side of the cam. I think the points should open as the coupling lets go, correct? Any thing else I should check? I can hear the coupling snap when it cranks over. The kill switch on the side of the mag. Should there be continuity between the strap and Magneto case? Is is such a thing as the insides of a Magneto going to heck just sitting? I've checked Dewey's article on here over and over again. Just tried again, nothing. Any help would be appreciated!!!!! !

DO AS ROD SAID. BUT THE COIL INSIDE THE MAG COULD BE THE OLD BLACK ASPHALT TYPE AND COULD HAVE A SHORT. THE INSULATION BREAKS DOWN WITH AGE.

Hi,

No, there should not be continuity between the ground strap and the mageto case. That strap should be insulated from the case until such time that it is depressed to touch the case and kill the engine. You are getting grounded out in some way. Check where the strap attaching machine screw goes through the case. There should be an insulating bushing there as well as an insulating washer on both sides of the case where the screw passes through.

I thought that the strap shouldn't be with the case but can't figure out how that would change. I'll check it today. Thanks!
