My father (the farmall man) has bought a ed-40, but we have found very little info on this tractor. He got a small operating manual with the purchase. The manual helped us locate the seial number, on investigation the serial number appears to number 10 or this is how i see it. Could this be possible?
The serial number as seen on the casting is ED4010 with no other marking around.
I have a 160 allis of my own so he may have seen the light. ANY HELP PLEASE

The ED-40 is a british built tractor sold mainly in Canada in 1963-to 1965, Allis imported about 400 of these tractors. 4 cylinders, Standard brand diesel engine, 8 speeds transmission, 3 point hitch. Very good diesel engine, but rear axle in paper, hydraulic not so good, seat bolted directly on the frame without any suspension, front axle and steering box a joke. My father own an Allis-Chalmers dealership in Quebec province. He sold 3 of them and he have 3 unhappy customers.

I've read the stats. on the low number of ED-40s imported to the US and I'm not sure what to make of it - and not sure I believe it. We had them all over the place here in Central New York. My neighbor bought two, brand new around 1963. Seems the local AC dealer in nearby Oneonta, NY was a good salesman. In regard to reputation, most people that I know that had them (I know where at least 20 were used), loved them - especially for PTO work, like running the silo-blower. My neighbor who bought the two new, was mainly a Deere user. At the time when he bought the AC ED-40s, he had two Deere 4020s and one 3020. He used to brag up the ED-40 Ricardo-Standard engine on how much more fuel efficient it was than his Deeres.
I know in Great Britain, the same engine was used in taxi-cabs and had a good reputation. In regard to the down-side of the tractor - the only weakspot I encountered was the hand-clutch was weak and undersized. When it slipped, it was often mis-diagnosed, and the engine clutch got changed in error. I fixed many for people by drilling holes through it, bolting it together, i.e. eliminating it. The benefit outweighed the loss of a live PTO. A bigger problem was parts availability. I did an engine job on an ED-40 in 1979 - and at that time most parts were no longer available from the AC dealer and I had to search elsewhere. I couldn't even buy a head-gasket from AC. That's lousy product support, and it's the main reason why many in my area got scrapped. Funny thing is, that now - with the Internet, and I can get all the parts easily.

they were made from 1930 to 1936. horse power was 28 drawbar and 47 at the belt. What's amaising it shows it had a 6.5" stroke
