I have a 2800 allis chalmers engine 4 cylinder engine that is in a combine and at about 7500 feet in altitude. It starts hard, when cranking some smoke comes thru the air cleaner. A sniff of either gets it running, but it smokes alot and is low on power. I am wondering if there is a head gasket designed for high altitude. the compresion is low at 175-180 on all cylinders and a leak down test is at 15 percent. This all started when the head gasket was replaced with an oem replacement. the engine ran fine before except that it had oil in the water, but that has been stopped. Any help/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Did the valves get adjusted properly?? If they are incorrect, it could cause low compression. Was any valve work done?

THE HEAD WAS SENT TO A MACHINE SHOP IN ALBUQUERQUE NM, EVALUATED AND REPAIRED/ADJUSTED. I AM VERY CONFIDENT IN THESE GUYS.

lots of smoke and no power could be poor injetion pump timing. did you move the fuel pump or get a tooth off on reassembly?.

ALL THESE THINGS HAVE BEEN GONE OVER SEVERAL TIMES. I APOLOGIZE TO ALL, IT IS A 433I INSTEAD OF A 2800.

The 433I is the same engine as the 6070/6080. It is a 4 cylinder version of the 301 6 cylinder. The only one I ever used had a similar problem. Would not start even on warm days without a sniff or preheat. At low engine speeds it would smoke so bad you would get lost in the cloud but ran real good over 1800 RPM when it could maintain boost. The compression you posted is definately too low. You should consider new sleeves and pistons but go with the Totalseal kits. I have put them in the 301's and 426's and they will start at 20 degrees without ether.

Found the problem, and I feel pretty stupid. The injectors actually can be installed 180 degrees off. the return lines will still hook up fine. the correct way is to have the return lines on the valve cover side of the injectors. Try it if you have the same trouble.

I thought the 2800 was a 6 cylinder 301 cu in.
I assume you are talking about a diesel.

If it is a diesel you need at least 300psi compession to fire.
