I am putting the shims in , bought a new pack of them do I put the hole shim in first and will that give me 2 thousand clearance? the crank was turned to 40 thousand under on the maines vince email [email protected]

you don't use shims on the rod caps, shims go on the mains. I would by all means use plastigauge. I don't know how you could guess .0015" without it!

I learned how to use plasti-guage and I recommend it. It will tell you what your clearance is. And it is easy to do if the engine is upside down on an engine stand.

It does take a while to set the shims...

You must put in the same number of shims on each side of the rod cap... Keep track of how many shims go in the 1st one, and that will give you an idea how many the rest will take.. I don't use plastigage...I keep taking out a pair of shims until the crank tightens with some tightening of the cap, then add one shim on each side...if it turns freely after torgueing, that one is done... Be sure to lube with engine oil/STP 50/50 mix, after setting the clearance..
