Generator green wire wd45

I am putting a new light switch on wd45. The old swithch that also has a resistor on it to cut back amps is shot. The new switch does not have resistor. What do I do with the green wire that went to the resistor before. It comes from the field terminal on the generator.? Can I ground it out? should I find another resistor that will work. What can I do until I find a switch with a resistor again?

The operator manual has all the details on the wiring diagram. wire colors, resistor, charging amps at at each position of the switch, etc.

Soundguy is right. If you get the generator working, do not just run it full bore indefinitely. It probably isn't good for the generator and is a death sentence to the battery.

the Field wire is grounded as Texas says to get full charge, and goes thrut he dropping resistor to get 1/2 charge. You get full charge when lights are on. For short term usage you can ground the wire to the frame and you will get 8 ampps constant charge. Thats alright for an hour or so. If you need to run all day, i would just leave the wire off and have no charge. Dont use much without the lights on. You can get a external resistor and add if you wish, but wont go to full charge with lights on then.

Since you say it runs to the field terminal on the generator, I would guess that means that you have a generator and a cutoff relay on the charging circuit. This resistor has nothing to do with the lights. It is designed to limit field current on the generator and is used when the switch is pulled out to the first position. It is not used when the switch is pushed in totally or pulled out totally (the lights on position).

If you can't find the exact replacement, you'll need to add a regulator to the circuit which will control the field current (which controls the voltage). If the generator doesn't work and you don't care, you can just tape the wire off.

If you want to use the generator to charge your 6 volt battery, determine if it is a grounded field or a voltage field. To do this (with the tractor running), connect the field to full battery voltage and observe if the battery is charging. If it does, you need a regulator that provides voltage on the field terminal. If it does not charge with voltage, try grounding the field terminal. If it charges with the field grounded, you need a regulator that grounds the field. Early Ford regulators provide a Ground - 9N. the newer Fords have the voltage providing regulators - 600.

Sorry, I haven't checked this out on my Allis tractors yet.

The genny on my G is a field/ground issue.

Could always drop in a low value radio shack power resistor or 6v/12v trailer lamp to act as some balalst.. an ignition resistor may even work.. depending on ohm value.. etc.

I wouldn't run that genny at full charge all day.. etc..
