final drive leak

Hello! Am new to the forum but now necessarily to AC tractors. Have had a C in the family for 30 years and inherited it when my Dad passed away last fall. I am in process of restoring the tractor and have entered the priming phase! I was under the tractor tonight and noticed oil leaking from the final drive housing/transmission housing joint. I am guessing the final drive seal is shot. Any ideas, words of advice? How hard is it to fix/stop? Guessing I have to pull the final drives one at a time and replace seals, but just want to make sure I am in the right place.

Thanks for the reply. The leak is where the final drive housing butts up to the transmission housing directly underneath where you sit. Hope this helps in describing where it is leaking from.

In reagards to manuals, i have the IT manual for Allis Chalmers. The all encompassing one for B, C, CA, WD, etc. If there is a better one out there I would definitely be interested.

Joe, it is a little hard to do much. In Allis terms, final drive means the shaft that the wheel is mounted. It has a sheet metal cover that bolts to the bottom. This cover gives access to the bull gear that drives the wheel. There is a seal on this shaft towards the wheel. If this seal leaks, it usually ends up on the wheel unless the wheel is at its maximum width.

If the leak isn't in the final drive but is in the differential or transmission, the description is of course different. It will help if you describe more of where the oil is coming from.

Changing any of these seals is not particularily complicated but it is a great help to have a manual. The manual answers so many questions. If you can't get a manual or need something immediately, send me an email and I'll send you some info.
