Serial numbers are 171712 if I'm reading it right that would make it a 1954 WD-45 right. Ya I picked up another tractor today, like I really needed another one LOL

chalmers bob,is true.the shifter on my wd is straight,the shifter on my wd 45 is curved.both are original shifters.

The information I have says the swap to WD-45 started with serial # 146607. The old WD's had the straight shifter until serial # 127007 when the newer constant-mesh transmission went into production. Of course, over the years any tractor could have had any part changed.

One way to cheak too is the wd had a strait gear shift and the wd-45 had a curved one

Some mid change over late Wd's had a WD45's curved Gearshift and some early Wd45's had a Wd engine with the Side plate on the Right side of the Block for Tappet inspection.

Yea you guys know more about it then i do. I didn't know about the wd and wd-45 engines because i am a Farmall fan but my WD-45 is the 3,524 off the assembly line March 8 1953 so it probably has a wd engine in it you will have to tell me if it does thanks.

My Uncle bought a WD45 in Feb. 1953, that tractor sure didn't have a WD engine in it. I don't still have that tractor to check the serial number on, but it had to be a pretty early #. For the first 20+ years of my life the WD45 sat beside my Dad's WD in the shed, and I know the differences between the two very well. The unstyled WC, which we never took the cultivators off of, sat in the third stall. The AC dealer has told me the story many times of my Uncle coming in to buy the WD45, he had his cash in a sugar sack and was a few dollars short of enough to get the loader also. The AC dealer had to take the loader off the tractor and keep it till my Uncle got a little more money together, because he wouldn't take the loader home owing anything on it.

I'm with John (MO) on this one. The heart of the change to WD45 at serial number 146607 was the switch to the 226 engine. There is no reason to believe that any WD45 came from the factory with the 201 WD engine.

Believe what you may .A 1954 Wd 45 was sold at my Farm Sale with an Engine with the Inspection Plate on the right side It was brought to my attention by a Bidder that this was so..I too am from ILL.and bought the Tractor used in 1965 from Hextell Imp. at Serena ILl. This is the answer I was given when I questioned the Dealership Personel and I was told that one other Wd 45 in the area had this Engine.Long time ago but I remember this deal well.

I believe you are correct that the new style transmission, that used the curved shifter, was added to the WD in 1952, with tractor #127007. However I have never seen reliable documentation that said the early WD45 tractors (starting with serial #146607) used a WD engine. Where is this referenced? Did these tractors use a WD engine that still had 201 cubic inches? Were these tractors you mention made with WD engine blocks, but with the longer stroke crank and new power crater pistons? Please tell us where we can find substantiated information on these �hybrid� tractors. I've heard this rumor before, but as far as I can tell there is no documented proof.
