I just purchased a 1966 AC D17 diesel and I have a few questions. I did buy the IT shop manual and I have ordered an Operator Manual which has not yet arrived....but I am getting anxious to get started on cleaning the tractor up and of course, I want to service it and run it to move it.....

Question #1....It had 2 12v batteries in parallel. What I find in the IT manual is 2 6v batteries in series. I know the 2 12v in parallel give me 12 volts, but the amps are added....so I get 525amps times 2 equals 1050amps..... any problems with 1050 amps from the 2 12v batteries in parallel?

Question #2...This tractor is positive ground....any need to change it over to negative ground? The previous owner said he had problems with the generator...which may have to do with the 1050 amps in Question #1 above...Once I change the fluids and start it up, I can check the output from the generator and thru the regulator....

Question #3...The shop manual does not seem to say much about fluid capacities or recommended fluid types...or to me, a novice, it didn't mean much.....I hope the Operator Manual does....anybody have specs for the following fluids? power steering, transmission/differential fluid, hydraulic/power divertor fluid..... .I can handle the radiator fluid and engine oil..... .

Thanks

Your comment about the service manual is the same as one a few days ago. Lube specs are in operator manuals,, service manuals have repair info, and parts manuals have numbers and illustrations to ID parts and their location.

Paul, when I got my D-17 Diesel, I got two six volt batteries and put them in series to get 12 volts. It worked reasonably well. When they got old and couldn't hold a charge, I put a single 12 volt in to see if it would start. It started with ease. I think my 12 volt that I am using now has 750 CCA which makes it just about the size that is in my F150 truck. You shouldn't need two 12 volt batteries - it will simply cost you twice as much when they eventually fail. Mine cranks fine with just one and better than it did with the two six volt. Batteries are much better today than they were when the D-17 was built.

2- 12 v batteries in parallel will give a lot more amps, and a more standad battery type. that is good. you cant have too many amps. -- you can change the battery from positive ground to negative ground. biggest problem is generator with regulator polarity. you can touch the B and G terminals on the regulator prior to startup to polarize system and see if the regulator will cooperate. might have to change the terminals around on the amp meter.-----i believe the transmission holds 24 quarts of 90 wt gear lube. the hydraulics/ steering should be the new universal hytrans (hydraulic fluid). power steering can be PS fluid, or automatic transmission fluid, or hytrans, just pick one.
