D-15 head gasket

Anyone with experience on D-15 head gaskets. I've got an I-600 forklift that I'm putting one in. Had the head planed. The service guy I talked to said that they can be a bugger to keep from blowing. (The I-600 has the same motor as a D-15.)

His tech manual says to torque to 80-85 ft. lbs. I have a manual for the I-600 that says about the same, but only 60-65 lbs for the middle bolt. Why would that be?

Agco was supplying the incorrect head gasket for the 160 engine. I went through 2 before finding this out. Contact Sandy Lake Equipment for the correct part number. The correct head gasket has fire rings. Clean out/chase the block threads for the head bolts and lightly lube. Torque to the mfg specs and you should be ok provided that the liner height is correct to allow the proper gasket crush. Jim

I would not go over 70 lbs. The last three D15 blocks I rebuilt had very weak threads. If I had to do them over again, I would use studs from ARPS. My only thought on the middle bolt is that it is longer and weaker than the shorter bolts. Best stay at 60 lbs. for that one. The best head gasket is from AGCO at $9 each.
