who came with the first self propelled combine,oliver must of had them in 1949 or earlier as on the back of my oliver 66 manual,1949,it mentioned self propelled combines

George Stockton Berry in Sacremento Valley, California had the first operating self propelled combine on his farm in 1885. The main propelling unit was a 26 HP steam traction engine and a 6 HP steam engine ran the seperator and the boiler was fired with straw with a blower used on the stack to reduce fires. G.S. Berry worked on this from 1881-1888 and by 1888 had one with a 40 ft. header that could cut over 100 acres a day. During the days of the bonanza farms in California G.S Berry, Daniel Best, and Benjamin Holt built other large self propelled combines in the late 1880s into early 1900s. Holt had several successful self propelled combines out before 1913.

I was thinking HOLT had one back in the twenties.

I know there is one in Belmond IA. (Owner is from Clarion)

Gleaner-Baldwin built one around a Fordson tractor. One used to sit in front of the factory in Independence, MO.

The rig you are talking about is now on display at the AGCO plant in Hesston, KS. This is where the Gleaner, Massey, and Challenger combines are now built since the closing of the Independence plant.

I thought it was Massey Harris. At least an Allis Chalmers book that I have gave credit to them for making the business first. Someone may have had something earlier. Don't really know.

Nope, first one was steam powered in 1885 by G.S Berry in Sacremento Valley, California. Info in "The Grain Harvesters" by Quick & Buchele put out by ASAE om 1978.
