My Dad had a 1952 WD with a curved gear shift. We re-did it, punched out the block and put WD-45 pistons in it and she ran like a champ until we traded her in. He paid $1200. CDN for it in 52. A WD-45 was $200. more at that time. Traded her on a Series IV D-17 in the fall of 65. Dad Passed and I quit farming in 73. Sure would like to have a D-21. Retired from Essex County in Onatrio to Florida.

An improved transmission was installed in 1952 on serial 127008 and up. It was a constant mesh vs previous sliding gear. It had the curved shift lever. Previous had straight lever.

Dear Daley boy, While I was waiting for Mikaela I decided to learn German It only took a few minutes with my exceptional brain power. So how did you Doctor appointment go? Tammy sure thought that was funny when you were peeing in the pond when we were fixing fence. Lisa told me that steve danced the whole rest of the night with that flower in his mouth. Well see you later

Not a for sure method of I.D. but generally a WD will have a Straight Gear Shift Lever and a WD45 will have one with a Curve to the left in it.Late production Wd's some may have the curved Gear Shift lever,of course if some one has changed the Transmission and/or the Lever ,that throws this Theory out the Window. Serial No. is almost a positive I.D. method. The Engine Inspection Plate is a good indicater that all is not as it appears, ,I know, I changed a Diesel in a Wd45D out and put in a good WD Engine I had and then sold it. The first Looker spotted the Engine Inspection Plate and asked about the Engine Swap right away.

I think mines a WD, but the transmission is a slight different orange color (see other posts) and has a straight gear shifter with a minor curve where it goes into the "boot". There is reverse lever running along the side of the shift lever. Is that a WC transmission or would that work? If I can"t read the serial number on the "pumpkin", can you tell the engine type/year from an engine block numbers?

WD45 started at 146607 serial number, WDs were before that number. The serial number is found on the rear, vertical face of the differential, left side, starts with WD..... ..

Number is on the rear end houseing. If its a WD there will be a plate/cover on the right side of the engine, if its a WD45 there is no cover on the right side of the engine. But with that said if the engine was changed at some time that will not tell you for sure becuase either engine will bolt righ in to either tractor

Old is right as usual, I just pulled a engine out of a wd that had a 226 C.I engine in it instead of the 201

If you don't mind, I'd like to know the serial number of that tractor. It may help to clarify an old argument about when AC started putting 226 engines in WD/WD45.

Hi I cannot find a serial number on the rear end of this tractor. I have scraped grease off everywhere and cant find it. ON the left side of the tractor engine if you are calling left side when sitting on the tractor I steel wooled the side of the block and found a block number wd254831ga. The engine appears severely stuck. Dont know if it is worth messing with or not. Dont know where to start with the stick problem. Have been told to remove the plugs and fill with diesel and let sit till spring????? ????

Ok, the BIG book of tractors written by Robert N. Pripps says this, The Allis Chalmers model WC was introduced in 1933 with a 201 c..(3,292 cc) and was known as the square engine tractor because the bore and stroke was the same 4"x4".More than 186,000 were built. It was succeeded by the WD in 1948, the same 201 was used but they upped the rpm's to 1,400. The wd-45 was introduced in 1953, built along the same lines, except they went to a 226c.i. engine 4" bore and 4.5" stroke giving it substantially more power. It could be had in, gasoline,dual-fuel, or lpg. Then in 1955 the wd-45D six cylinder was offered. So acording to this author the wd-45 in 1953 was the first 226.ci engine from the factory. That doesn't mean there's not some wd's out the with a 226ci in it cause I just torn one down!
If I can help write me back
good luck

226" engines made their appearance in WD tractors before "WD-45" appeared on the hood. This was in response to farmers asking for more power. All of the tractor manufacturers were providing it and Allis didn't want to be left in the dust. As best I can figure, the 226" engine was introduced on tractor #146607 but the decal "WD45" did not appear until tractor # 160385 rolled off the line. I was wondering if yours was one of those between serial 146607 and 160385. Some people who either weren't around at the time or were not all that interested have a hard time believing that Allis made changes to their tractors as the line moved along and didn't wait for a model year change like the car companies did. So, you see changes, some of them quite significant,in the middle of a model year.

So it is your claim that the WD45, was not a WD45 until a decal proclaimed it was? Sorry but I'll have to disagree with that. According to Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985 by Norm Swinford, the WD model ended with tractor #146606 and the WD45 began with tractor #146607. I don't know if those tractors between #146607 and #160385, that were considered 1953 models, had WD45 decals or not, but I have always believed that the WD45 was first produced in 1953 and not 1954. I know for a fact that my uncle bought a WD45 in Jan of 1954, and it had the WD45 decals. I only have pictures of that tractor left and so can't check the serial number. It was sold in 1986 having had one engine overhaul and no transmission rebuilds.

WD block can be stroked with a WD45 crank, many, many, many have been. She's then a WD from outside but a 45 on the inside. Don't worry it's all good as long as she runs and does what you need the old girl to do.
