Hi Vince, Since you have a '39B you most likely will have to deal with a spirally-grooved crankshaft used on the earlier models. A standard rubber lipped seal will not seal on such a crank without the use of a special speedi-sleeve, used for shaft repair. The original seal was either a leather or cork seal that provided nearly 1/4" wide flat surface against the crank that covered the end of the spiral groove. The standard lip seal that you may find as a replacement will not do that as it seals on a point of contact rather than over an area. I believe your situation will be very similar to what I encountered on the belt pulley seal on my '42B. You can see that here. I have replaced that front crank seal on my B, which also has a grooved crank, using the old cork gasket that comes in many gasket sets. It can be done but it's generally a bear to do without breaking the cork. You may be able to find a leather replacement seal, perhaps from AGCO. However, if I had to do mine again, I'd go the speedi-sleeve route and use the rubber lip seal. In any event, It is important that you center the front cover so that the seal area is perfectly concentric with the crank. The front cover is not pinned to the block but will move around a bit in the clearance of the attaching bolt holes. You want to make sure that when you replace the cover, that there is no uneven force around the periphery of the seal to cause an uneven seal that can leak. Rod
