Hello everyone,
I have been looking around for a good used loader tractor. I normally run green, but I'm not hung up on it. I have found two or three 180 and 190AC tractors that seem very reasonable. I have talked to a couple of people that say these tractors ultimately have transmission trouble. Apparently they jump out of certain gears (the ones I'm looking at don't have this problem) I don't know anything about AC so is this correct and if so what is the problem? These tractors area both diesel and seem like they would be good other than that potential problem. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I agree with C.B. You just have to be patient with them. They are not powershift.

The problem with AC's transmissions was not the tractors fault it is the operator. We owned a 180 and several other models for many years and have never had the first problem. Most people don't know how to operate them properly. To shift the transmission you must stop the tractor and it's best if the power director is put in neutral before shifting. Most people want to shift on the go and that will not work. We still have several AC's and none of them have transmission problems. With the equipement available today something like a skid steer or something like that would be good if you are doing alot of loader work. for field work or work around the farm the AC's will do a good job-they have good power and the power director makes them handy for many jobs. I have experience with both a 180 and a 190 series III. the 190 had alot better transmission than the 180, the 180 I ran would jump out of 7th/8th (road gears) gear so fast it would make your head spin so in order to use those speeds a piece of notched 2"x4" had to be jamned in between the trasnmission and the shifter to hold it in gear. You heard right, the transmissions were their weak spot. To be honest with you I really wouldn't think either of these rigs would make a very good loader tractor, these were also not the smoothest shifting tractor, no diff lock, and I think the hydrolic pumps were nothing to write home about, so you'll probably have a slow loader. If your used to running JD (especially some of the newer stuff), I think you will be disappointed with these old AC's. Ok, now that I've probably said some stuff that I'm sure others will not like, I will say in their defense they make excellent chore tractors, put them on your feed mixer wagon and with that hand clutch they are ideal for that. They also make decent haying tractors, but a loader tractor, I'd think you might be better off with something else. Best thing I've come across for loader work is a skid steer.

Thanks for the advice. I will defer to your expertise. They are a good looking tractor, but yur right, they weren't real smooth shifting. Thanks again!
