Anyone know how to wire up a 12 v. alternater to a 12 v. neg. ground D-17 III with factory key switch. It was not right when I bought it, only one wire came off the alter. post to + side of amp gauge. I do know that the 1 and 2 spades have to go someplace also but not sure on a - grounded system. The - side of the gauge was hooked to the bat. ground. Needless to say it's not charging. help, and thanks.

You folks seem to have a good understanding of this wiring issue, so even though I am wiring a different tractor (David Brown) I am still not clear on wiring to the ammeter... does the + from battery go the - side of ammeter, and then all the items that draw go the + side of ammeter?

Ron, on MOST ammeters Ive seen, on a Neg ground tractor the ammeter + supply terminal would wire to the battery, while the genny or alternator output PLUS loads like lights n ignition would all wire to the other - Load terminal. If its a Pos ground tractor, that all reversed.

Regardless, the supply side has but one wire, the battery feed, while loads PLUS the genny are over on the other side. if she reads bass ackwards, simply reverse the leads.

Running the wire from the number 2 terminal to the battery post on the alternator is ignoring the voltage drop in your heavy gauge wire. I run the wire from the number 2 terminal to the positive post of the battery. The wiring will work the other way but the voltage to which the battery charges will be slightly lower. On the resistor, a auto repair manuel I have list the resistor as a 10 ohm 7 1/4 watt. I just use the diode and have not had any alternator problems. The purpose of the resistor or the diode is to prevent ignition back feed which will let the ignition system receive power from the alternator. This will let the engine continue to run with the ignition switch in the off position.

Well, I think all I've done is burn things up, or at least not help the problem. Lets do it right this time, o-kay.
1. The factory key switch for a D-17 has, two spades for bat. It has one spade, which is only hot when key is turned to start and I know where this wire goes. It has two spades that are hot anytime the key is on, which, one of these must go to the coil.
2. Now, the alt. post is to be hooked to the + side of the gauge, and the bat. side of the switch gets power from this same point, right?
3. The - side of the gauge goes to the bat. + cable as charge input, right?
4. WHERE and HOW does the power get to the switch this way?
5. Is the wire to and from the bat. + cable to also be hooked to the bat. spade on the switch?
6. # 2 spade on alt. can be hooked to alt. post or to the bat. + cable, right?
7. NOW, just where does # 1 spade go at ON THE SWITCH?
8. One wire goes to the coil from the key switch. One wire goes to the starter switch from the key switch. One wire from the key switch goes to the bat. + cable. One wire goes to the light switch from the key switch. One wire comes from the amp gauge to the key switch. 9. Is the wire to the bat. + cable from the - side of the gauge to be hooked together and put on the same bat. spade of the key switch which already has a wire on it from the + side of the gauge?
I know this makes me sound dumb, but I've done it the way it seems that all of you have said and it still isn't charging. Yes the alt. and gauge are good. I think it is to do with the power to the switch and the charge to and out of the switch. Thanks again for your help.

Okay, here we go..... .

ANSWER. I agree, whichever terminal thats HOT and STAYS HOT anytime the switch is in the ON/RUN orrrrr rrrrr the Start/Crank positions, is what feeds the ignition coil. Its gotta have voltage in BOTH the Start and Run positions you know. Insure the coil feed wire is on a switch terminal thats hot n stays hot anytime in the On or Start positions.

QUESTION 2. Now, the alt. post is to be hooked to the + side of the gauge, and the bat. side of the switch gets power from this same point, right?

ANSWER: Yes, the alternators output PLUS the switches BAT input MUST BOTH hook to the SAME side of the amp gauge, BUTTTTT NOOOOO OO, on a Neg grounded tractor, normally the alternators output PLUS the switches BAT input terminals would BOTH be wired to the - ammeter terminal, with the other ammeter terminal wiring to the hot ungrounded + battery post, often at the starter terminal. However, Ive seen ammeters labeled funny, so No Warranty on which terminal, other then regardless, the battery source supply is on one side of the ammeter while loads plus the alternator wire to the other side.

QUESTION3. The - side of the gauge goes to the bat. + cable as charge input, right?

ANSWER. IT DEPENDS IF YOURE AT POS OR NEG GROUND. Buttttt t most alternators (including the GM 10 SI) require Negative ground. No warranty on this, cuz Ive seen ammeters marked different ways BUTTTTT TT usually on a Neg grounded tractor, the ammeters + terminal is the ungrounded + battery SUPPLY feed terminal, while its other - terminal is the LOAD terminal that wires to the alternator PLUS provides voltage for the loads n switches.

If the lights or ignition are turned on tractor not running, the ammeter (if wired correct) will swing to - discharge. if its wired bass ackwards it would swing to + charge. To fix that, SIMPLY SWAP WIRES SIDE TO SIDE.

QUESTION 4. WHERE and HOW does the power get to the switch this way?

ANSWER. An "ideal" ammeter is a short circuit and the voltage is the same on BOTH sides. The switches get power from the ammeter, but over on its non battery Load side. Therefore, the switches BAT input supply terminal should receive their voltage source from the LOAD side of the ammeter, the same place that wires to the alternators main output stud.

QUESTION 5. Is the wire to and from the bat. + cable to also be hooked to the bat. spade on the switch?

ANSWER Nooooo o The ONLY place the wire to the battery or starter post (main battery voltage feed) should be wired is the hot ungrounded SUPPLY side of the ammeter. That way the ammeter accurately reads the net current flow into the battery (charging) or out of the battery (discharging). DO NOT feed the switches BAT input terminals from the battery/starter, they should receive their voltage off the ammeters load side terminal so it measures their current loads.


QUESTION 6. # 2 spade on alt. can be hooked to alt. post or to the bat. + cable, right?

ANSWER Right, but its a lil more accurate if wired to the battery

QUESTION 7. NOW, just where does # 1 spade go at ON THE SWITCH?

ANSWER Run a 14 or 16 gauge wire off the switches IGN output terminal (same terminal that feeds the coil) with a series 10 ohm current limiting protection resistor to the lil No. 1 side terminal on the alternator to excite the field. Thennnnn nnn if she runs on after the ignition is switched off, add a diode (wired in correct polarity) to prevent backfeeding the ignition

QUESTION 8. One wire goes to the coil from the key switch. One wire goes to the starter switch from the key switch. One wire from the key switch goes to the bat. + cable. One wire goes to the light switch from the key switch. One wire comes from the amp gauge to the key switch.

NOTE I disagree/question that wire from the switch going to the battery, any switches BAT input terminals should be fed from the ammeters load terminal (see above)

QUESTION 9. Is the wire to the bat. + cable from the - side of the gauge to be hooked together and put on the same bat. spade of the key switch which already has a wire on it from the + side of the gauge?

ANSWER. Sorry, you lost me. REMEMBER THIS The ammeters Supply terminal should be wired to the battery/starter, while its other Load terminal is what feeds all switches their voltage PLUS wires to the alternators output stud PERIOD.....

I agree, if the alternators output isnt wired to the SAME side of the ammeter the lights n switches are wired to, and the other side of the ammeter isnt wired ONLY to the battery, the ammeters NOT gonna show net current into (charging) or out of (discharging) the battery PERIOD

Kent, I got that 10 ohm resistor info from a GM engineer and that agrees with your manual so it must be somewhat accurate and Ive always used it myself. Often when using it, theres no run on problem so the diode isnt even needed Ive experienced, and due to the current limiting protective potential of the resistor, I always start with it then add the diode if still necessary. The didoe becomes even more necessary when a tractor doesnt idle down very slow n one tries to turm her off at higher RPM's. Of cousre, Ive seen em last forever with the diode only so whose to say, but Im a believer in protection n safety so usually use the resistor. I totally agree the lil 2 terminal is a voltage sensor point and should ideally be monitored off the battery itself, but dont usually bother to do it the "engineering correct" way cuz I get lazy lol

I have done this convertion on three C-II Gleaners and my Father-in-Laws MT John Deere. I have not had any problems. The first C-II I did , which was my machine I used the 10 ohm resister. Itwould not shut-off so I have used diode every since. I have also wired my 67 Dodge 400 truck to use the internal regulated Delco as I found an 85 amp version at a flea market for 50 cent. I cleaned it up and found nothing wrong when I spun it up. When the little 37 amp Chrysler alternator goes out I will have the 85 amp ready to bolt on. I have already reworked the needed mounting brackets.

sounds like you have a 10SI Delco alternator. like OLD said, the #2 spade is just connected to the 1/4 inch lug on the back of the alternator. the big lug has a big wire (10 gauge is o.k.) that goes to one side of the amp gauge, other side of gauge goes to the + battery.----- the #1 terminal is the excitation and needs to be a little less than 12 volts to get it to kick in and charge. I use a resistor. go to Radio Shack and ask for a 10 ohm, 10 watt resistor. it will be bround, about 1/4 inch square and 3 inches long. pinch spade connectors to the ends. run from #1 terminal, to the resistor, out of resistor to the key switch. this wire is hot with the key on, and no power with key off. #2 is always hot.

Steve, I ALWAYS also recommend the 10 ohm current limiting protection resistor in the excitation circuit to the lil 1R terminal as you used, since it can serve to protect the alternators internal diodes. Thennnnn n in the event the engine still runs on even after the ignition is turned off, I add the diode if its needed. That 10 ohm resistor doesnt actually need to be such a high power rated unit, but I still use like a 5 watt just cuz bigger leads may be easier to wire and I reckon a 10 watt power resistor may be even easier. Same as you, I place the alternators output on the LOAD side of the ammeter that way the net current into (charging) or out of (discharging) the battery is whats indicated. Similar, so long as the switches BAT input is also fed from the ammeters Load terminal, that load is registered through the ammeter.

John, your correct on the part (so long as) thats where most people mess up. And I have found that even with a diagram that a lot of people still can't wire on up. I sent out 5-10 emails today hepling a guy got all his wires do so it would work. Guess thats why I like to keep my wires short as I can and simple as I can and also easy to get to if you have to fix/rewire something. Never fun to have to pull the dash just to fix a loose wire because the vibration and 2 or 3 wires has made things come loose.

I certainly hear ya and agree Old. I think the problem is its just a matter of trying to put something in words that would be sooooo o darn easy if we were there to lend a hand. Ever try n put one of those do it yourself wooden Home Entertainment Centers together lol. I usually get a lil wordy n long winded from being an Engineer (retired from that) before I became an Attorney, and WORDS are all an Attorney has to sell lol. We can take 100 words to say what a normal person would in 10.

I cant argue much with that one either. I didnt go to law scholl until I was well into my forties (had already been in engineering and full time farming, i.e. had a "real life") but I saw so many good young kids enter the game but near graduation time they grew into cocky and arrogant brats lol

Steve you know hooking it up that way you don't get a good reading on the amp gauge when you have the key on but the engine isn't running. Yes its one of the dozen or so ways it can be done.

With an alternator it has to be - ground or you will fry the alternator the moment you hook up the battery. To hook it up you. Run a wire #10 from the big post to the + side of the battery or to the solinoid post where the battery cable goes, The #1 terminal wire a wire to the ignition switch with a diode in that wire, white band on diode to the alternator. The #2 terminal goes to the big post on the alternater. E-mail me if you need more help just help another guy today with the same type of problem.
