why did AC use shims under the main caps? must have been a better way!

One other thing. I think they stopped the practice on later model WD-45's and on the D-17.

The practice was in use since the beginning. It allowed more tolerance in the maching process and also permitted the owner to tighten the bearings after years of use so they would be virtually as new. Personally, I like the practice. I end up buying a lot fewer bearings. Though it does take longer in assembly. That plasti-gauge works good but it takes time.
