my d17 diesel is a 1961. im thinking this is a series one. am i correct?

Wolfman, that's not good what you told.
In 1957 came the first D-series. D14 and D17. The first D17's was produced from 1957 to 1959 and where paintend Persian orange with orange wheels and silver decals and rims.serial numbers 1001- 23363. In 1959 came the D17 with a received radiator grill with a black border and bars. This model was only built from 1959 to 1960 with serial numbers 24001- 31625. 1960 was the year for a new styling for AC. AC came out with a new D17 and was unofficially the Series 2. It was painted Persian orange No. 2 with cream wheels and grill. This model also have a short metal name plate with black letters and a round aluminium muffler. Serial numbers, 32001- 4150. This model was built from 1960 to 1962. In late 1962 the D17 series 3 came out. The series 3 designation appeared on a wide cream colored hood decal wich also included the ACname and model number Series III. The headlights were moved from the front of the grill to the rear fenders. and there was a new oval shaped muffler. The series 3 where made from 1962 to mid 1964 with serial numbers,42001- 43358 (1962) and 65001-72768 (1963-1964) no tractors where build between 43358 and 65001 , i dont know why. The latest serie was the Series 4. that was buil from mid 1964 to 1967. They had Series IV on the hood decal and a hydraulic pump at the belt pulley location. Serial number range was 75001-89213.

Quick way to tell: If it is all Persian Orange, lights up by grill, small decals, about 1958-1960 it is a series I ; if silver grill with black stripes, decal plates, about 1961-2 it is a series II wasn't called series until series III came out. Series III's had the large band decal full lenght of hood, lights on fender, dry type air cleaner, new type seat, cream grill, about 1963; Series IV looked like series III except live PTO pump placed where earlier models had the belt pulley behind flywheel, about 1964-5; Series IV's might have that massive factory 3-pt hitch and side consol hydraulic controls. If all else fails, go by the serial #.
