THIS IS A WHOLE NEW AREA FOR ME. I HAVE TWO RED TRACTORS RIGHT NOW BUT I AM LOOKING AT A 1964 D17 DIESEL THIS AFTERNOON. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHO MAKES THE DIESEL IN THESE TRACTORS? ALSO WHAT KINDS OF PROBLEMS SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR AND WHERE THESE DEPENDABLE? I AM FAMILIAR WITH THE D17 GAS. WHAT SERIES WOULD A 64 BE? THE AD SAYS LIVE PTO WOULD IT POSSIBLY HAVE LIVE HYD TOO? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME

The power dir could be an expensive problem. would think 3500 would be plenty for it,kind of depends on the tires, is it a wide front, how it the tin work? I have had 1 for twenty two years, would not trade it a gas.

I have a D-17 Series II (1960) D17 diesel. It is an excellent tractor. My only problem with the engine in the last 10 years has been to rebuild the water pump. Buda made the engine for the early WD-45's. I believe that somewhere in the late 50's, Allis bought Buda so the engine became an Allis engine. Serial number 75001 (Series IV) and later had live hydraulics and a factory 3 point. Some of the tractors in 1964 were Series III.

I Echo BNcT's Words exactly. I owned a D17Gas and it was a very good Tractor for it's size. I never owned a D17 Diesel but I did own a WD45D [ they each used the Buda 6 Cyl engine] and after replacing the Head twice I found a wrecked WD 45G with a good Engine so I swapped out the Diesel for the Gas. Then I had a good Tractor. Besides my Wife twice put Diesel in the Car so I eliminated that happening.LOL John

WOW! THATS A LOT OF INFORMATION. THANK YOU FOR THAT. I DID LOOK AT AND DRIVE IT AROUND TODAY AND AM STILL UNDECIDED. IT LOOKS EXCELLENT, DEFINITELY SHEDDED AND RUNS PERFECT. BUT AFTER RUNNING IT UP AND DOWN THE ROAD IT LEAKS DIESEL OFF ONE INJECTOR PUMP LINE AND ONE OF THE FILTERS, POWER STEERING PUMP LEAKS SOMEWHERE, AND THERE IS A HYD LEAK BY ONE OF THE LIFT ARMS. THE THING IS THOUGH THEY WERE NOT THERE AT FIRST GLANCE SO IT WAS RECENTLY CLEANED UP TO HIDE THIS. THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME REAL COMFORTABLE. ALSO POWER DIR. POPS OUT OF HIGH GOING DOWN THE ROAD. HE SAID HE WOULD TAKE $3500.

i'm thinking true live hydraulics didnt come out till series 4 and ''live pto'' only when using power director instead of clutch.
as far as dependability it depends on your definition of the word...i'd say if it starts with no help at all other than manifold heater it mite be worth draggin home...WHEN...not if head gaskets blows you can count on finding a cracked head and sunk liners so figure on a complete overhaul and some head work if you want a everyday workin tractor...personally it'll be a cold day in hell before i own another buda diesel.
good luck

BC, did you ever find out what caused it to blow a head gasket again? Do you still have the tractor? Best of luck with it.
