Just got a 51 WD and I need to replace the battery. It's turning out to be more involved than I thought it would be. I've got all the manuals but none tell me what I need to know exactly. It came w/ a 12 volt but how do I tell if the tractors been converted? That battery might have been wrong. If it needs a 6 volt, which one to choose? If you help me get it started I promise I'll have about 100 more questions for you. Thanks in advance!

Mouse, If its been converted theres a good chance (if its a battery powered coil ignition not a Mag) theres one of those external Ballast Resistors (many are white ceramic bathtub style approx. 1/2 x 1/2 x 3 inches) wired in series with the coil ahead of it after the ignition switch. That would have been necessary if they used a 6 volt coil after a 12 volt conversion UNLESS they changed to a new full 12 volt rated coil. If it were converted and it charged okay, theres likely a 12 volt generator obviously. When 12 volts are used and the old 6 volt straters left, they reallyyyyy y crank fasttttt tt.

If it was 6 but got converted and now works fine at 12 volts, one doesnt necessarily have to change to 6 unless originality and the Correct Police are important. If you go to 6 volts I recommend the highest rated CCA or Amp/Hrs that will physically fit into the compartment and large battery cables like 0 Gauge. If its a 12 volt genny, it could still charge at just 6 provided the Voltage Regulator was changed to 6 volts, and if its got a 6 volt coil and an external Ballast Resistor but you change to 6 volts, simply remove the Ballast so the coil sees 6 volts.

OK, first to see whether it"s a magneto or coil ignition and go from there. Thanks, I"ll take a look today and post again if I get stuck.
